Greetings, this is my first post here.
My name is Ivan and I’m from Serbia.
I have tried to find a solution for my problem on these forums but I had no luck (not sure if I just missed it or it isn’t there)...

I got this task at the university to model a ship, or a barge and to determine its resistance by using several computer programs and hen compare the results with manually calculated ones (it is for a subject „use of computers in traffic“ at my PhD studies) and delftship is the first one I downloaded and installed.
The only problem is that I have never done this sort of thing and it is proving to be a nightmare for me...
I went through tutorial and did kinda OK.
The problem that I’m facing is modeling from body plan only (for this ship that I chose).
If I try to model the barge that I chose I have body plan and profile view but the profile view is incomplete (middle section is missing since it is parallel) so I can’t set scale for it so what remains is only body plan for it as well...

I would really appreciate if someone would help me get over this problem...

I really tried hard but this is proving a bit difficult to overcome by myself.

Thanks in advance and I’m looking forward to being a member of this community.

PS- I just hope that I added this topic to the correct section of the forum, if not I would kindly ask the admins to change its location...

    attached images are:
barge - body plan of barge with profile view which is incomplete (missing the parallel midle of boat)
motorn_cargo_boat - only body plan for the motor cargo boat

Perhaps you just need to understand the plans a little more. The center section is probably omitted because it is just strait sections (maybe for adjusting length?). The second drawing is showing the FRONT and BACK (bow and stern) divided by the vertical centerline (left side is stern, right is bow) I doubt that anything is missing that you need. Just need to grasp the thinking going on.

    thx for a quick reply.

    that is absolutely true.
however the thing that i don't understand is how do i use the profile view when the part of it is missing?
In the tutorial that i found (on delftship.net) the bacground image is set to scale and in my example i can not do this since that one part is missing and i would get wrong scale and size...

i understand this as well. during my studies i had to draw one ship manualy (pecil, paper, thin stripes of wood and weigths...) so i understand what those lines represent.
my question is how do i model a ship according to those lines in delftship?
    what do i do?
do i do it only in body plan view?
has it got something to do with stations?

You know the overall length....so you align the stem and stern with that and fill in the blanks....you will use the bodyplan and profiles as "background image" when doing your modeling......right click in any freeship window and a pop-up menu gives you the background image button with set, move, scale...etc.....

    Profile view
As you can use just one image at a time on each view, you can:
1- photoshop the background image to put away bow and stern until right dimension.
2- model bow, then move background image with ORIGIN command and model stern.

    Body Plan
knowing all dimensions, you can make a hull using just the bodyplan image as a background.
In Delftship you model with the control web, just configure the sections to the same separation distance as your bodyplan image (use the INTERSECTION command for that) and then try to fit them moving the control points. It's much more easy than it seams to be.

    thx quequen

    this can be tricky, right?

    i will try this way.
should i remove default intersections (ones that delftship showed me) and place the ones i have in my body plan for this?!
any idea how many points should i use in logitudinal and vertical directions?! it is a Danube river barge that is almost like a box...

I supose it is, but at this moment it is very difficult for me...

Remove all Stations sections from INTERSECTION COMMAND, then create the ones you need at distances you know (you must to convert the loa fractions to some real dimension, i.e., 1/10 loa coud be 5 mts if your loa is 50mts.)
I think I'll make a tutorial in a few days based on this thread.
Don't forget to keep the control web as short and little as you can. Big control webs are very difficult to adjust.

    thx
    this seems very useful.
i've been trying all day today to do something...
it is starting to look as "something" but still it ain't a barge...
this advice about the size of control nets may lead me to better sollution tomorow when i get up...

I don't have much experience w/Delft but if it is anything like Rhino, i have found the best way to work from plans is to 'slice' up different the sections in a graphic program (photoshop etc). Just be precise when you do it.

Sounds like, according to Tad, you can do this within Delft, if my understanding is correct.

    Good luck!

Photoivek, here is a .fbm file with your example, modeling from just a bodyplan view. It needs refinement but shows you, more or less, how can it be done.
1- You must to set an initial hull similar to what you are looking for (LOA, Beam, Draft, etc).
2- Continue modeling the hull shape to approach the one you need. Keep control net as little as you can.
3- Charge your background image. If it is rotated you must to correct that on Photoshop, Photopaint etc. before inserting. Use Origin and Scale commands to put your image at the correct place and scale.
4- You must to clear the actual stations and put the ones showed on your image, at the right distances.
5- At Preferences-Hullform change the station color to one different from black, so you can see them clearly.
6- Open at least 3 views at the same time and move control points while checking changes on stations. Remember: keep the control net ordered and little.
