That is not true (as almost always).

Many of those North sea boats make excellent cruisers, especially those with the beefy Callesen, B&W, Grenaa engines and the like, combined with the (common) CPP, they are hard to beat in efficiency.

But they must be scrapped, no matter how good the condition, because the owner received money from EU funds to get the boat retired, and leave the market.

 

Still working on the kayak tender concept. Something to haul four people and their kayaks around for up to a week at a time in comfort.

As you say a 30 footer is at the extreme bottom end of do-able, and a 45 footer is probably a bit large, but somewhere in that range is the boat I'm looking for. When I sat down and did a theoretical design with EVERYTHING I wanted it came out at 48'.

I don't have a strong desire to live aboard, though there will be times when it would be a handy ability.

Is anyone salvaging the usable parts off these boats, i.e the engines, CPPs, etc? Seems like there should be a booming business in used parts.

I was also going to ask you, do you include fixed fire suppression systems in thew large yachts you design?

 

Fornaes in Denmark is one of the biggest, if not the biggest in that market. They have a hughe inventory of second hand items, including entire wheelhouses.

Fifi systems are mandatory today if one wants to sell yachts. I just build them, I do not design them.

There's a very nice converted 38 foot or so fish boat in the yard in PT right now. It's next to the French lobsterman by the co-op. Seems an almost-finished project, a nice cabin has been built over the fish hold and most repairs and rebuilding done. Maybe for sale.

isn't it also nowadays next to impossible to convert old commercial vessels for recreational registration because of the RCD, inside EU that is?

Depends... if you own the boat, you can do pretty much whatever.. but not to sell forward a DIY boat (that's what it is then) before 5 years passed..
Commercially it must be revised to meet ISO rec boat standars..

 

No, it isn´t. But that was not the topic. A fishing craft, once payed to be scrapped, has to be scrapped, and that is tightly controlled.

Any freely purchased boat may encounter a second life, no doubt.

I like it! You could ride a bicycle off the ramp at full speed into the water for fun.

 

Just think of all the windmills you can add to deck to provide power for propulsion. And all that area for water collection, you can plant tomatoes, and even fruit trees. And if you get tired of motoring - sink the bottom decks in shallow water and you have your own island.

 

Didn't Top Gear try that? I think that's how they lost the black stig.

That 38' boat in PT has a Sheriff's notice on it and is going to come up for auction. Looks like she needs a reef, refasten, recaulk pretty badly but is much better than the one that started the thread. Big enough for 4 people and 4 kayaks if they're friendly.
