I celebrate thanksgiving sorta like the people of the Caribbean celebrate the coming of Columbus or the Mexicas celebrate Cortez

one thing that might be some form of parallel is the relatively new discovery that the Aztec/Mexicas did manage to capture a large caravan of Conquistadors on there way to assist in the **** and plunder of Tenochtitlan just outside of modern day Calpulalpan and made of them offerings to the Gods, after which they ate them with a nice cilantro and Chili dip.

why study history when it's far easier to make it up?

Before you feel too sorry for the Aztecs, maybe you should learn some history. You might start with 'The Discovery and Conquest of Mexico' by Bernal Diaz -- the only first-hand account of their overthrow -- and go from there.

You'll find the Aztecs were so hated as bloody conquerors and extortionists that the entire countryside rose behind the Spaniards, and marched with them. The conquest and destruction of the Aztecs was carried out under the leadership of Cortez all right, but he had a hundred thousand native American allies helping him. As a matter of fact, that's how he finally solved the problem of getting across the lake into the heart of Mexico City: his Indian allies filled it in with rocks and dirt, square foot by square foot, as he advanced.

And you know what? They were better off under Spanish rule than they had been under the Aztecs. At least they weren't being collected on a regular basis and having their beating hearts cut out of their chests, as a sacrifice to the gods... and then having their arms and legs roasted for dinner.

Personally, I don't hold with eating people. Especially without cilantro, and the Aztecs didn't have any. It was brought by the Spaniards later.

I'm happy as a clam, Hoyt. Got to go home and spend two and a half days with my wife and older son; read some letters from my younger one; cook up a big Thanksgiving dinner; eat it; top it off with a couple of bourbon and seltzers; take a nice nap; etc.

 

actually the Spanish killed off about 90% of the population or at least got a great head start on it when the pilgrims came along and finished the job. whereas preexisting cultural traditions led to cities greater than any in Europe at the time, Advances in astronomy and mathematics that are still poorly understood today and there construction techniques are as of yet surpassed. They also had surgeons with skills that are just now starting to be a little better understood

so how was it again that the Spanish improved there lives
small pox or Typhus

the funny thing is that although the Spanish did employ certain rival indian clans to fight against each other they inevitably turned on each. All of the native tribes were subject to slavery and military subjugation eventually. Or are you trying to say that the Spanish thought of the natives as equals after those pesky Aztec's were all slaughtered

just sayin not everyone see's history or thinks of thanksgiving the way you do
for some was all about conquest and misplaced trust.
