    OK lots of updates !

First off here are the requirements for my OD16 (http://www.bateau.com/proddetail.php?prod=OD16) boat and system three's available materials (they replied with cost as well):

    10cm, woven tape 120g, 15m long
System three: 4 inch tape – 9oz weight

15cm biax tape, 400g, 30m long. (I can 200 use and over lap it 1/3 over the seams. if 400 is not available)
System three: 12 oz – 6 inch biaxial tape

400g 45 x 45 biax fabric cloth, 9 meters x 127cm, (if not available i can use 600 but it's harder to work with and uses more epoxy.)
    System three: 12oz – 50 inches wide
I have to do some calculations to see if they are the same or would work...

Its actually cheaper to ship everything from the states than get it in Egypt.

I was quoted for General purpose resin and hardener or silvertip resin and hardener (which will have additional hazardous price) havent used any so not sure what to go with.

    ----------------

Second i have met a manufacturer today that will quote me for a light steel structure similar to http://www.shelterlogic.com/pk_26x40x16.html
    Should be much cheaper though.

Unfortunately i have no place to build now as my father has decided to build in the location i wanted (no comment tbh..) So more searching ....

Seems the lobster 15's plan have been lost in shipping :( its been 22 days and should take a week, ill wait till the end of the week to see what happens.

Been a looong day so im off too bed im knackered ...

    You can compare prices here:

    http://www.shop.r-g.de/

And maybe you find even better shipping rates from Germany.

These System Three products are well known amongst homebuilders though.
Raka is cheaper as far as I know!

This test might be interesting for you, although ten years old:

Thx for the post Richard, Raka seems like a good product.
Unfortunately i ran out of time and missed the opportunity to ship everything to the forwarder agent (took to much time to figure things out) so back to square one .... *Sigh*

I guess ill just wait for the plans, read it carefully and take my time figuring things out .
    -----------------

Well just got some epoxy samples from CMB ..... i am not optimistic at all they never used epoxy in marine application, they tried to convince me polyester is better, stronger and is more expensive !!!
So yah I think they just gave me common glue or something .....

On a side note .... the BOOKS HAVE ARRIVED !!! plwyood boat building, The guougen brothers, Amature fiber glass and strip planking as well as OD16 S&G plans.
Wife gave me the "look" more boats ? :p

Im ecstatic ! now to find a place to start mocking about as i go through the books ....

Howdy folks ! Just a quick update and some advice if possible !

Marine plywood is not available any more ... so i took a look around and most builders use Finland Counter wood (picture attached) instead of the expensive and non available marine plywood.
They seem to be happy with it and recommend it as an alternative.

It comes in the same thickness i need (from 6mm to 200mm) but the size is 150 x 150 cm as opposed to 240 x 122 cm for marine plywood.
It is also MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper.

if push comes to shove would i be crazy to build my boat with that wood ?
Since in reality its either Finland counter wood or normal Malaysian plywood.

    Seems to be Birch ply.
You could use it when it is absolutely fully encapsulated in Ep.
Birch is rich on sugar, that attracts marine life and insects! And it deteriorates much faster than marine ply once wet.

Get a small strip and make a boiler test, to see if at least the glue is of sufficient quality.

    What the Malaysian stuff?

Malaysian plywood Its normal plywood, breaks a part very quickly (specially the glue) ill still do the test on it.
The picture attached is both malaysian plywood and the wood i want to use.

Whats the boiler test ? boil water and put the strip in it to see of it the layers hold ?

Yes, cook the ply strip for one , let it dry, then try to chisel the veneers apart.* If the glue fails it is not what you can use. If the veneer fails (it will), thats ok.

EN 1087-1 is the paper describing the requirements to get approval.

    Richard

*with marine ply you can repeat that procedure several times.
