Actually, it is quite possible to get all the proteins and amino acids that meat has from a vegetarian diet; you just won't find them in any one source.

Nine amino acids are 'essential,' which means we can't synthesize them in our bodies and have to get them from our food. You can get all of them from meat, or you can combine different plant-based foods. Many traditional combinations, especially of grains and legumes, are 'complementary--such as beans and rice, or beans and cornbread.

Not that I'm a vegetarian myself. But I do realize that my craving for steak is as much an addiction as it is a dietary need....:)

In Florida the Key Deer are the size of dogs and are protected.

I think it's rather simplistic to say Roman games were the cause of the European lion's extinction; they were dwindling and disappearing long before the Romans started using them in the arena.

Hunting pressure in general gets a lot of the blame--both for sport, and because large predators don't coexist well with agricultural cultures who keep animals. Several sources also mention possible competition from packs of feral dogs.

Although the Romans were certainly no help to European lions, I'd say the root cause of their extinction was the spread of humans across Europe, and the resulting loss of habitat and prey.

edit: complete sidetrack here. While I was researching the lion's prey, I found this about the 2000 lb European bison/wisent:

Despite their size, wisent can jump across 3 m / 10 feet wide streams and 2 m / 6 foot tall fences from a standing position.

I fail to understand why it is that whale harvesting as opposed to fishing is being singled out here as a practice worth stopping. I looked into it, and the whales that are being hunted are from large populations of animals more than capable of sustaining controlled culling for food purposes. Now if you want to advocate a non-animal diet that is a different conversation, but there is no difference to me in harvesting a whale or a tuna so long as the preassure placed on the animals population is moderated to ensure health stocks of the animals.

I have to agree. (with Troy, I think)
The "killing" of animals is never a pleasant sight, take a tour in your local slaughterhouse if you don't agree. The animals there are frightened for some time before they die. In a way, hunting is better, then the animals have a "good" (natural) life first and then a sudden death.

    From Wikipedia:
I think several other areas are more important than whale (and seal) hunting if you want to improve animals rights or the way they live and die, for example bull fighting, fox hunting, the fur industry and the meat industry.

Now it's lamb season here, wonderful meat from cute little lambs that had one good summer in the mountains and then...

Have you ever figured how many folks could eat what a whale eats in a year?
