I'll start with that as an aperitif... Music choice wasn't bad either...

Here, they serve it thinnly sliced...and with a small side dish of light soya sauce and wasabi, to be washed down with sake (cold sake of course).

How do prices compare with cattle beef?

More expensive.....but so is normal cattle beef here. This retails nominally around US$150 per kg.

    What, cattle beef?

Hey Ad Hoc, who cares about boats and ships, we should start a business of meat export towards Japan...

    Sadly yes :(

If you try and import and sell cheaper, they'll just slap on a huge tax. An "import" tax. This helps to keep the locals competitive...true competition is frowned upon here in Japan. Because this means one person/company shall get more business and be more successful. This is not harmonious...thus not 'allowed'. Everything must be in harmony here, what ever it costs...literally!

Every shop sells roughly the same products at roughly the same price...it's a joke!

That sounds really incredible. Something like a capitalist version of communism... :p

But still, looks like it works. I mean, Japan is still there and kicking hard, so the system does work, right?

Take a look at the right hand column in this thing. It doesn't look too good for Japan.

Much cheaper here (in Norway), whale 120NOK(15€)/kg, cattle maybe twice that.
There's some export to Japan from here, mostly King Crab not whale AFAIK. Some decades ago I was working in meat industry in Finland and we sold a lot of pork to Japan.
    Thanks Hoyt of the link!

Stagnation mostly IMO, it works but not any progress to talk about..

I've been to Japan several times and love it but it also drives me crazy.

    Imagine the reaction I get....at 6'4
