    Hello Everyone,

I have tried a search for my particular question, and I am sure it has been done to death, but I cannot find a suitable thread.

I am very seriously considering an amature build of an Easy 11.6. This Cat meets nearly all of my requirements (everything will have its compromises) and is relative cheap to build compared to say a Fushion 40 or Shionning.

I have asked this topic in another forum, but the contributors mainly seem negative about the performance and resale value. Performance is not a huge factor for me as I am just looking for a comfortable family cruiser (no racing intended), and I have pretty much determined that the Easy is the right boat (and maybe a Fusion 40 someday :D )

I had asked in 'the other' forum about hiring labour on an hourly bases if things got too difficult for a DIYer or I needed assistance on certain parts, but with the boat prodominately being a self build. I was quickly told that was a dumb idea, and maybe so......

I had another thought of having the boat build in Nusa Dua Bali and had visited several boat building yards, before someone mentioned Malaysia as an option.

I dont have the time available for me to takeoff to Malaysia and scout around for a suitable yard, but was wondering if anybody here has any experience with having a boat built in Malaysia and possibly have some contact details so I can email/phone any boat builders.

    Thanks guys in advance

    Chris

Lots of people have successfully built Easys, don't let all the negative people put you off!

It could also be worth looking at some of Mike Waller's designs - similar construction methods, but just might suit you more.

There is an excellent, very helpful forum, particularly for Easy builders, but open to all builders, here: http://www.hostmybb.com/phpbb/index.php?mforum=easy

Thanks for all the replies fellas.

Gypsie, Ill get onto some of those contacts, thank you.
Alam M, I dont understand why the negativity about the Easy's, or ply boats in general. I have juist signed up to that other BB, and it seems to be a wealth of information for the amature builder. I thought this BB might be a bit better in regards to info on professional help. My wife and I are at 'crossroads' at the moment and contiplaiting going through Asia, have a boat built and sail back home. We thought it would be a great experience for the kids before they really need to settle down for schooling.

Over the years I have read lots and lots about Easy's - their market value was good up to 2008 and I think it has gone down the same as any boat after that. The seller got their money back if it was a job well done.

However if I were you on that side of the planet I would look at the Oram -
the 2 builds that I am involved in follows similar building practice and it saves big time

work your way thru the site - tons of build info

    my project

after years of research I would go Oram or Schionning if I were in your neck of the woods

    Manie B,

Thanks for your input. The Oram or Schionning were both makes I originally looked at. Very nice boat indeed but very expensive. You can put an Easy together for about the same price as you can by a Schionning kit. I would love to build a Schionning Wilderness or similar, but it will be years longer before I can afford one let alone build one and get back on the water.

Bob Oram's kits are a lot cheaper than similar sized Schionning ones. Same material. Simpler and faster to build too. Something like a 39C would still cost more than an Easy, but possibly not by as much as you'd think.

Pretty roomy and fast boat too. I sailed on one across the Gulf of Carpenteria, and we averaged just on 8 knots, for the 350 or so miles, only using headsails, and partly furled headsail at night.

    Hi Islander....

No, not really. I have tried to get in contact to a few recommended from this post, but have had not much luck in getting hold of them. I did manage to get hold of one fellow in Lombok, and he was extremely helpful and honest, but wasnt too keen on the job. He had a big project underway.

Back to the drawing board I guess, or a better look at the secondhand market.
