Best Marine Design Software for Hull Modeling? (2010)

Best All round hull modelling software

For my money it's 3d boat design - It seems to be pretty flexible and I made good progress with it although I must admit, I couldn't get the rotational view facility working as I think it should. Not bad though for under $50

 

Actually...pretty bad seeing as it is a re-packaged Free!ship which is.........FREE!
Sorry to burst your bubble but you got ripped off. Do a search of 3D design and you will find the threads. Martjin...the author of Free!Ship and Delftship is a member of the forum and will confirm that nothing but the splash was changed in the software.

 

Oh...never mind...I just checked your profile and you list the rip off site as your web site under contact info. Sorry...you won't find it very friendly around here if you are the one pushing the ripped off software.

 

Although Free!ship appears to be the same as 3D Boat Design, there is a subtle difference. 3D Boat Design has a "Bulkheads" feature. As near as I can tell, Bulkheads are not included in Free!ship. You can insert Multiple Points on a plane, but Curvature for that plane is all out of whack, making plate development impossible (unless you can correct the curvature problem for the newly created plane). As far as Developed Plates are concerned, you can always export the Developed Plates from Free!ship into AutoCAD, along with the Linesplans. AutoCAD is very powerful at manipulating the plate developments so you can minimize the amount of plywood you need to build a plywood boat. AutoCAD is also great for designing Frames from the Free!ship export of the Linesplans, and for laying out the Strongback.

Question to Rhino or Maxsurf developers and users: What makes these programs so popular to you? Features? Ease of Hull design? User support? Accuracy? Learning Curve? I for one am always open to purchasing a good hull design program if the money is worth the investment. The programs I stay away from are those that require the user to pay for support.

 

I would like to ask also about SolidWorks. There is now an add-in called Shipworks. for it, which seems good for 3D ship structure modelling & 2D nesting and I'm thinking about purchasing the whole package. Anyone has had experience with SolidWorks?

 

Regarding Free!ship and 3D Boat Design, does anyone trust the Cross Curves of Stability generated by these programs? I calculated the Righting Moment from the programs Cross Curves of Stability, and they seem to be on the (very) high side. Obviously, Stability is very important, and to error on the high side is a double bad situation. I see that Delftship Free has removed the Stability Analysis option from their free program. Regarding hull modeling, these programs seem to do a fairly good job; you can even take a set of linesplans and generate a hull model by importing the image into the program. As for Hull Modeling, I found Free!ship in itself difficult to navigate at first due to the lack of help/tutorials. You will need alot of patience to work through the hull modeling process for sure. Free!ship seems to give very accurate "developed plates" - worked great on a small boat I designed and built anyway.

 

Free!ship plus Version 3.13+ is an update to the Free!ship version I've been using. The programs Stabilty Curve agrees with what I field tested on a boat I recently built. Lots of new features added too. Credit to Apex1 for the link:

anyhow, most good software have trial versions, guess solidworks too, to see if you like it
