The real and deadly pirates with government backing

I generally like your posts, apex1. But in this thread, I think you were seriously out of line.

The gentleman who started it didn't call for boycotting India; he didn't say a word defending China; he simply brought it to our attention that the naval forces of at least three countries are preying on civilian shipping.

That fits my definition of piracy; piracy is a legitimate subject in a forum such as this; and China slaughtering its own citizens during a political rally eleven years ago has nothing to do with piracy today, thousands of miles from Beijing.

I don't understand why you attacked him so viciously for bringing it up. Nor do I understand why Hoyt continues trying to hijack the thread and turn it into 'a let's bash China' thread, instead of one about piracy under the cover of authority.

If no one objects, I'd like to see us drop China and get back to the subject at hand. I think it's an interesting one.

However... I am of German descent. While I can't take serious offense at your Nazi reference (inference?) it was vicious at worst and knee-jerk at best.

This is interesting. The thing at the end about "appropriating" seems fairly close to the original problem of piracy. Might makes right.

Apparently, the good professor is one of those who believe the solution to any problem is more capitalism--especially capitalism backed by the force of government.

Why stop there? Why don't we have the international community 'appropriate' Haiti, while they're at it? They can sell it to a private company, which will then rule with an iron hand, keeping order so its profits from the tourist trade isn't threatened....

I'm kind of curious, though: who exactly acts as an agent for the 'international community' in a case like that, and under whose authority? The United Nations? Do we really want to give the United Nations the right to appropriate a country's territorial waters, or other territory, and sell it to a private company?

And who would the money from selling Somalia's territorial waters be given to? I don't think I'm going out on much of a limb, when I say you can bet your sweet *** the people of Somalia wouldn't see a dime of it....

I agree completely with your sentiments, my German partner in our business Marine and Yacht Managment would also agree however the uncontrolled and sustained personal attack against me and my integrity when imparitially presenting an article from an international and reknown maritime trade magazine was unprofessional, ridiculous and members of BDF deserve better. My comparrison to historic events a means to illustrate bizare behaviour is simply not acceptable to reasonable people.

Boaters are exhorted everyday by government representatives. I will no longer go to Bahamas or Mexico. It is horrible and they are getting more aggressive every day. Sometimes I think their police is working with the other pirates also.
