If you were to toss big rocks off the stern, how many and how big to go a thousand miles?

 

It would require more than your available displacement.

 

....wouldn't it depend on how many you tossed off.....and how often......and anyhow what is this about....rock tossing stopped in the 19th century, it was called balast then, lots of little bream feeding mounds are all over the world because of them......old ballast heaps.

....I would expect that the rocks could be stored in ya head.

what if you had a bulk carrier following you with a trebuchet tossing the rocks astern of you?

I think the main problem would be to find enough adulteresses to throw the stones at.

since you didn't say the conditions i will say one, the wind pushing the sail boat will help to achieve the 999.9 miles left.

 

One would work, if you were at the northern end of the Mississippi or a tributary river feeding it, especially if the rock were tied to the dock keeping the boat from moving downstream.
