Whale breaches, lands on boat

A whale breached and landed on a 10-meter yacht off South Africa; a tourist caught pictures. The people aboard are probably glad they were on a steel yacht. The incident dismasted them, but they were able to limp back to port.

Why? Because the tourist didn't also stop the whale and get his driver's license and home address? Come on. How often is someone going to get a 'perfect' series of pictures of an event like that?

The pictures of the damage were obviously taken by the people on the boat, or someone connected to them. The pictures of the whale were taken separately by a tourist who didn't know them, and published in the newspaper without their prior knowledge.

There's a difference between healthy skepticism and blind cynicism. Tell me: what do you believe caused the damage to the boat, if it wasn't the whale?

??? There are six photographs with the article. Four of those show damage to the boat: one at sea, and three at the dock.

Click on the attached slideshow, near the top left of the story.

 

ST, you need to click on the"incomplete" pictures and you will see the damage done to the sloop.

 

I only see 1 1/3 pictures dispite my best efforts to see the rest.

Looks to "Me" like the score is Whales 1, Touristoes 0, from those pictures... Up here in Alaska, there is a 200 yard "Vessel Free Zone" around any Whales, and enforced by the USFWS, and a whole slew of self-appointed Whale Lovers. I have to listen to these Yahoos, on the radio all day long, whining on Marine Ch.16, "You are to close to those whales", and "I got pictures of you, that I am turning over to USFWS." I am very happy to see all these folks head south every September, and leave us locals in Peace & Radio Quiet....

 

Apparently, your best efforts aren't enough. I suspect you aren't really trying very hard....

If you look directly to the left of the top photo, you will see the attached slideshow, where you can click the word 'next' five times to see the rest of the pictures. Alternatively, you can click on the partial photo. It will then show up completely, with the next photo partially showing under it. Rinse and repeat as necessary....

Or you can ignore them, and continue claiming it's just ********.

when I saw the first tourist photo yesterday I thought "photoshop", but now that I see the full set it looks authentic to me. It appears real, lucky shot by "tourist" I guess, too bad they did not get more of the whale on top of the hull.

All of the damage looks consistant with the fist picture, and unlike the fake pics, this one has the shadow over the boat, and water dripping off the whale and on the surface and on the boat. Difficult to fake that for a hoax, and the damage to the yacht is real enough.

At least he has proof of what happened for his insurance company. Would have been interesting to see what happened to the boat with the full weight of the whale on it.

 

I didn't have any problem seeing the photos.

 

Submarine Tom's problems seem to go beyond a simple inability to see photos....as an instructor of mine used to say, "he has iss-yews."

 

USFWS is responsible for freshwater and terrestial animals. NMFS is responsible for whales. If USFWS asks you to do something relative to whales, ask them under what authority.
I, too, thot the photo was faked but for sincere reasons, like a re-inactment. Upon blowing up, I don't know. My question is not whether a whale landed on the boat, because this happens and is not particularly newsworthy (to me, anyway, stuff happens with these animals all the time), but why wud someone even lie about it?
With less hunting, the stupid ones are propagating and like a moose will run down the tracks until he gets hit, these things are the "Baby Hueys" of the animal kingdom. .
