I believe that gaining practical experience is much more valuable than any MSc in Naval Architecture...

Yes, just after getting Ph.D. I escaped position in University, and changed my career 180 degrees to practical design side (that I always had passion to).

Consider that in reality many production and engineering companies are not willing to hire specialists with higher degrees. In Thailand candidate with MSc requires higher salary, but if same job can be done by another guy with BEng (and often can be done better) - why pay more?

I think the quality of the education is about the same at these three universitys. You have to dig deeper into what you want to study and what they offer.

You also have to consider other factors like social life and accomodation.

I would recommend Chalmers, but that is only because I went there (computer science). :)

In the UK you should check out...........

University of Strathclyde (in city of Glasgow) (O)
    Newcastle University
    University College London (N)
    Southampton (SC)

In the USA you should check out.....

    MIT, Boston
    University of Michigan
    Webb Institute
    Texas A&M (O)

In the above, O refers to an offshore focus, N to a naval focus and SC to a small craft focus. But they all cover the other bases as well - to some extent.

I think the Newcastle reputation is pretty good. But I don't know the details of their MSC course. You should go on website to see if they have any brochures.

If you want to do a MSc or Phd by research they have some good tutors.

Newcastle used to be an industrial/shipbuilding city - but that is now gone. It is not the most beautiful city in the world - but also not the most ugly.

Social life in Newcastle is pretty good for young people. People there are friendly - much more so than some other parts of England.

But the weather is ................British !

Thanks a lot for the answer! :)

I actually have an offer to study for a MSc at Southampton which I might take. I'm a bit worried because I know UCL has a better reputation as a whole university than Southampton, do you know if there is much of a difference between the two in the department of naval architecture? I have never been able to find university rankings for naval architecture...

Also do you know what kind of people MIT accept? I went on their website a couple of weeks ago and I could only find courses for people who are in the American navy... Am I mistaken? And even if it is a Master/Bachelor for everybody I've heard it's incredibly difficult to get into MIT...

For sure in GENERAL UCL has a better reputation than Southampton.

But for naval architecture SPECIFICALLY there is not much difference.

If you prefer yacht and small craft, Southampton is better. If you prefer more of a bias to naval and offshore, UCL will be better.

I don't think MIT is limited only to US Navy (certainly did not use to be). I think standards of entry will be high, as it is a very good university/department.

    Hey,

Thanks a lot for the answers. Southampton seems like a pretty good option for me.
You've already been very helpful but do you know which unis in the states are more focused towards small craft?
I noticed you didnt include the university of New Orleans in your list, any reason?

Sorry ngyen but I dont know about these universities...
