Happily it's better than that, or the sport is not worth:
Very old ciphers around 1990: Victoria (Australian, Lindsay Cunningham design) with 3 slots wing if I remember well. 12 knots upwind on very flat sea, wind 4 knots. Max speed: around 30 knots in a 20 knots wind.

 

The C class and Moth are 2 very different ways of engineering for speed.
Until now C Class are rather "classic" displacement cats with the most powerfull "engine" on: the slotted wing. Cz until 2.4. The limitation comes from displacement mode, and it's difficult to make these cats a lot lighter. I'm afraid we are close to max perfs obtainable with this configuration.

The Moth is a very different approach. Simple soft sail, minimal hull and the foils. The radical way to get rid of hull resistance; flying. The max speed with the minimal material and power. Pure brain juice well used. I do love. The movies on Youtube are fascinating.

While there is loads of evidence of a flying Moth being faster than every cat under 20' and some evidence that it is faster than a Tornado now there is this story from the British Invictus(C Class Cat ) guys:

Yesterday we were joined on the water by Adam May on his Mach 2 Moth. Whilst we could power up well before he got on foils, once he was up he was a good bench mark. Down-wind in a little more breeze he sailed through us comfortably whilst I tried a slightly hotter style with more weight outboard (It didn't pay and we resorted to the deeper sitting to leeward style). Upwind we were obviously faster and reaching we could reel him in... but like I said, these were winds at the low end of his foiling spectrum. I'm sure we will have plenty of opportunities to match up again in the future. Adam's top speed for the day was 15.6 whilst ours was 16.5... for what it's worth (I think we shared the same wind in general but niether of us just focused on peak speed).
Pretty damn remarkable for the little 11' monohull!!!

 

It was done about 1955.

 

So, did the designers provide all sorts of dimensions and coefficents for this design?
