Too Close to the Wind

Thanks for your help guys. Tried a few things since my last post. Club boom wouldn't work because of cabin but appreciate the principal. More sail up front (with a temporary genoa) improved things a bit. Then I tried raising the jib, just 12", to be clear of the cabin, using a strop... and bingo - she's right up into the wind where she should be. Although it wasn't obvious from the tell-tails, which are a fair way up the sail, I guess the turbulance and drag of the cabin were 'spoiling' the full power of the jib into the wind. Problem solved.

 

Follow up for anyone interested!

Seeing as so many of you contributed, I thought I would just post a follow up for anyone interested. This is the log from last Sunday when I sailed up Southampton Water. Goose-winging on the way up in a gentle south-easterly then tacking back into the wind against a small tide. As you can see, lifting the jib clear of the cabin has definitely made a difference. She's full of surprises and I'm starting to appreciate her again. Thanks for your contributions. Pompey

 

Very nice to read a success story where one simple change solved a problem. So many times, it's a matter of incremental changes here, there and everywhere, that eventually add up to a noticeable improvement--or not....
