Making a Boat mold???????

  1. bad copy, good steal. i guess in one way or another u cant make a boat in so many ways so i would say most of the things built today are stolen or copied in one way or another, and to me why invent a wheel when u dont need to. and yesterdays boats are made in a very similar design not much that change between them there are a some basic forms of shapes that are used for them. what u need to look for when making a boat today is to make it light and streamline formed to make is as little as possible resistance in water depending if your deisg is going to ride on the water or in it.

and if you have a passion about boatbuilding and you want to make a good deisgn u will make a great boat, some can go through a lifetime without learning anything and those with passion can make it happen in parts of that time. without asking you will never learn and there is never a stupid question if someone wants to learn. like kids they are not born with experience they learn by asking and doing and thats how we all do.

its like with all professions if youre passinate u will do great things if youre not you will do average or mediocre work or products.

Very well put. Thanks and i am passionate. and too landlubber, If you wanna piss on a parade go #$%^ in the toilet and piss on that!

I am asking because i want to become a builder, i want to design. I am extremely passionate about sportfishing and its not a dinosaur u idiot! I have talked to captains, and first mates, and engineers and i have a great idea and path for a boat design and idea. I will make it work, like i said whether i get advice here or from a bum!
I want to learn and nothing will stop me from doing that. You obviously earned to be a $%^$ head somewhere, where did that come from landlubber!
I dnt want to steal and idea from anyone, i want my own claim to fame but by asking questions i am only gaining knowledge and learning. I know how things are made and the wrong way and right way. So i will pursue asking away.
For you landlubber, What is the very first step id take to getting a boat made? And what are my options if any? and did you know that sportfishing boats acutally raise catches based on the rumble of there diesels and that if they werent synchno tht they would even be better fish catchers.

    sportfishing,

Yes I do know about syncro etc etc, that is the very reason I said to you to learn about the game before you even consider making anything.

...I think it is time for me to move on, you are doing what we try not to do here...get personal, and I will not enter into it...have fun...

I think you need to go to you library and find some books firstly on designing boats , then move on to how to build boats , then onto building fibreglass boats and if you are still keen , get a handle on how to make plugs and moulds ! Every boat yard anywhere in the world is packed full of other peoples dreams and people that had great dreams of making a million before dinnertime .
Enthusiasium it the biggest killer of dreams .:?:
You are no differant than a million other people on the planet in a 100 differant countries, we all had great ideas and wanted to set the world on fire some time or another .
I hope you have plenty of money because you wont have it for long !! there are more thieves and crooks in the boating industry than almost any other industry on the face of this earth .
I have been in the marine industry for more that 35 years and made all kinds a things big and small .My full time job now is to travel to other countries showing guys simply how to laminate and make boats so they dont fall apart and to make moulds and make plugs simply because they donot know how!.:p

"But see i am the boat builder, i am the designer "...

..and finally you admit to it

....."I am asking because i want to become a builder, i want to design."

...had you started like that you may have had a much more favourable presentation...there are many successful builders on this forum mate....all you need do is ask...but don't then crap off when you do not hear what you wanted to hear.....

  6. a reply

its allways fun to see on forums some people how the there is allways a small part that thinks they
know it all about whats on the forum. i got lots of those answers like RTFM read the manual from lots
of forumers when i asked for answers in a friendly manner not pretending i knew about what i was asking
for. that was a long time ago i learned what i was looking and realized that many of those that said
"rtfm" didnt really knew what i was asking about. i would guess its like here too, be friendly answer
if u want and can add something to discussion dont be rude and jump on someone elses back just because
you didnt like the way someone asked, if you dont wanna be treated like that yourselft the dont say
    anything,

i have seen lots of rude, abnocious and *******s in my days. if you think someone is a nutcase let him
be that and let him learn on his own dont treat him like **** and say bad and degrading things.

there are some that dont know about proper/perfect english and use the right words for the occasion
like me sometimes i dont know what words to use and i get missunderstood.

i can admit i dont know boat-terms but that doesnt mean i am stupid or doesnt understand portions of
how a boat works i am trying to learn and very curious about it, but i would guess some boat guys would
laught at me and call me stupid and its that kinda ignorant ones i dont care for.

i thought this kind of community is to share and help each other and be polite and nice,
if you cant do that keep it for yourself.

like in my other message either you will do great boats with fabulous handling in the sea or you will
make average ones that are nothing special.

p.s. the bad karma will catch up to those that deserve it.

  8. well i can answer you that a female mold is one wher u build your boat inside the mold and you start off with paint inside it and then build up with fiber and epoxies the male mold is when you got a boatshape or mold you wanna build on u start with putting fibers and epoxies, in both cases you need a release-agent so it will release from mold, otherwise you will have a hell of a job to get it out, i guess this mistake is only done one in oneces lifetime hopefully.

i would think that female molding is the most common today, one plus is that u dont need to paint your boat when its out of the mold its already done.

and the better jod u do with with filler cloth and epoxies less job with finishing work

    Making a Boat mold???????

I am looking into wanting to build boats and i was wondering about boat moulds and plugs. What male moulds are and female moulds are?

A male mold is where the boat (the actual boat) is built over a framework, the framework may or may not be part of the boat, but it will be the shape of the boat, minus what is called the "Molded depth", which is the thickness of the "skin"...molded depth is measured from the outside of the skin towards the centre of the boat. Sometimes the framework is going to be the true framing of the boat, other times it simply provides the shape so that the "skin" can be applied, the false framework is removed later and the real supporting frames are added later, such as bulkheads etc etc.

A female mold is where a "plug" is made, and from this plug the mold is formed over it, the mold is reinforced structurally and then removed from the plug. Care is needed all the time to allow release form the plug, as anything that will not allow release will possibly destroy the mold. The plug is in fact the actual shape of the object that the mold is to copy, it can even be a real boat, a restored boat for the purpose of making a plug, a cardboard cut out copy as such of a real boat (a boat built from crap materials, but finished well to allow a fine finish on the mold), in which case it will be destroyed on removal of the mold.

What are the different types of builds and how do you go about choosing a type of build.

For your purpose only, I will discuss only a few examples of different builds, that suit the sportfish idea.

Firstly, it has to be decided just how many boats that you wish to make, we have already determined from previous discussions that you intend to go into production, so let us start there.
Strip planking....fast, easy way to create a boat, either as continuous production or one off. Possibly one of the cheapest construction methods too, as the material costs are relatively low (as compared to hi tech composites for example). The process is made from an upside down built framework of simple bulkheads positioned over a backbone former to hold them all in place. Some of these bulkheads will be real, others to help retain the correct shape. These bulkheads are then covered with thin square strips of timber (or foam) that has been shaped with concave and convex sections where they meet. As the strips are added, the curved section allows easy and fast precise contact with the next strip. They are epoxy glued and mechanically fastened together (these fasteners may or may not be removed later) and so on up she goes towards the keel, starting at the gunwale. The job is sanded fair and epoxy and glass sheathed to finish it off. It is then turned over and the deck and fitout commence.
Plug and mold.....this is the most common form of plastic boatbuilding. I will only describe the old solid boat sort as other composites are really a discussion in themselves. The plug is made as per the shape of the real boat, it is covered in tooling gelcoat (a harder and more easily polished form of gelcoat), and then constructed basically as a frp boat would be made. Over the tooling gelcoat is applied a tissue layer of glass cloth, followed by csm glass and layers of woven rovings. This is built up in excess of the normal scantling for a boat as it has to withstand a lot of punishment as time goes by. It is usually at least twice as strong as a real boat. It is reinforced on the outside with wood and steel framing, all attached permanently to it. The mold is turned over and the plug removed. The mold is then the opposite of the real boat. The real boat is made inside this mold as per the spec of the designer, but the basic layup as above will do a solid boat.
Next comes the composites as well as resin infusion etc etc, maybe for a later date...I am dealing with basics here only, so there are many variables even in these.

I want to build a sportfisher. Size is yet to be determined and i don't really know if that would be a factor in building method.

Yes it is, today's boats are build very light yet very strong...it is here that the determined use of the boat is to come into play, as there are subtle differences in the way game boats are made compared to say, the cruiser.....you have discussed the syncro of the motors, there is also many game boys that will only fish from a wooden boat, solid bottomed, etc etc, so you alone can determine what market you wish to play

I guess it would probably be around a 30 to 35 foot. Um an express or even a center console with a wider than normal beam.
I want an extreme entry level deadrise and also a 15 to 21 degree transom deadrise.

So you are making this boat for use in choppy conditions, extreme deadrise, particularly aft means more hp to push it to the same speed. 15 deg is normal, 21 is hard (like the Noble alloy boats used here), but very smoooooth in the chop.

I am reposting my question because i didn't exactly start off on the right foot with my original and i want to make it right. Sorry everyone for being a knucklehead, know it all!!!!

Hey mate, it takes a better person than me to admit this, and we all understand, thank you , lets get on with the show......

So if i went extreme deadrise aft would the boat be really rocky in calm waters. It would obviously cut choopy water. How do you balance it extreme bow entry and subtle deadrise aft. ???????? and im looking at going wood now because wood built yachts are "dinosaurs" as you say landlubber! lol and its really a lost art. Such beautiful boats though. well Im off to find more info.

  11. not an expert, but i would say is not all about how the boat is designed its how its going to be used and on what kinds of waters and with that in mind you make a compromises on your deisgn. a bit like why design a slim hull as "wave-breaker" but never used the boat in that kind of waters, and not only that today people are aware of fuel costs more than before so make a hull more economic to run is also a thing you have to be concerned about if your gonna build boat for other, last and least design gotta appeal to the buyers so you might sell some.

Tell me have you ever done any boating ??
Have you ever actually been out on the water in the places where sportfishing boats go ??

"Personally, I see the game fish boat industry as a dinasaur...big engines (fuel guzzlers), killing scarce natural resources (not very piblic minded), one use designs (waste of materials) etc etc...but ignore all that if you still see it as being a good thing...go for it."

...where did I say wooden boats are dinasaurs mate, I love wooden boats, in fact if you re read my post #24 just above, the first boat I advise you to build is a wooden boat....what can I say.

I have given this some thought and if i were to build a boat i would begin with bricks and mortar . Built a rectangular pen or tank say 30ft by 15ft . Then begin to fill the tank with bricks and mortar to create the shape i wanted . Obviously bricks and mortar will not lend themselves to a smooth finish but plaster can be manipulated into any shape whatsoever . Paint the finished mould then wax over the paint so fibreglass won't stick . Now all you have to do is paint resin onto the mould , apply glass , let it set , and when you remove it you will have a smoothly finished hull that can be strengthened any way you choose .

PS i've no qualifications but maybe just a little common sense .
