Some Canadian dragged Vancouver's weather to Tampa caught on his bumper. Please come retrieve it. It is 1 degree colder in Tampa right now than it is in Vancouver, B.C.

Cold Weather Not Good for Southern Amphibians

All my banana plants died. So did this little critter and most of his kin.

I read that many of the frozen lizards falling out of trees came back to life when it warmed back up. Maybe the toad/frog just needs a pail of warm water.

Prior to this year the longest cold spell before freezing since about 1910 was 6 days. This year it lasted 11 days and today it is still uncomfortably chilly. I am sure they didn't all die, but many did, along with many of the more sensitive fish. Snook, for example, were killed off as far south as West Palm Beach.

and there is another surge from the arctic oscillation
whether it makes it down to Florida I dont know but its sure hit here and its predicted to stay for the next five or six days

its not over till the fat lady sings

now consider that the amount of fresh water entering the marine system recently is considered a major contributing factor to the weakening of the gulf stream, which if you remember brings warm water north and moderates the arctic oscillation, which at this point I think we can all agree is acting in a rather unusual way.

so your cool weather is likely a direct result of a disrupted climate system caused by ice melt

you might want to argue what caused the ice melt but in the end ice melts when the temp rises and freezes when temps decline

a perfect example of how general warming temps bring about localized freezing events

Sorry, B, I just don't buy it. This is just the jet stream on a wayward course. That is why it is called weather.:)

    the system is not random

every action has an equal and opposite reaction

if the arctic oscillation is particularly strong this year then the question is why

there are obvious atypical alterations in the system caused by man
aside from the standard typical deviations caused by natural phenomena

if you are having atypical weather
in a year or period of time without atypical natural phenomena then why isnt it justifiable to consider the effects of mans interaction with the environment

we know the ice is melting
we know the gulf stream is slowing
we know the arctic oscillation is significantly influenced by the gulf stream
and we know that this oscillation event is likely the strongest ever observed in modern times ( need to wait till the end of the season to know by exactly how much )

    so whats not adding up

    oh
its not just the jet stream
its a cyclical oscillation of the jet stream pattern that is hundreds of miles off course and far stronger than anything seen by the guys up at NOAA
or at least thats what the guys I talk to are saying

the words tipping point have come up a lot lately but that remains to be seen

anyway we should keep this to the climate thread
I'll give it a day or so and then erase these last few

    B
