    Nice vid, Capt Vimes.

The funny thing is that some other people here seem to keep on saying that heavy boats like those in your video are never uncomfortable or wet, and never encounter waves over the deck. There certainly seems to be a lot of bashing and crashing and solid water over the deck in your video.

Dearie me, perhaps it's not just those evil light boats that can be hard to sail in a breeze?

I don't think anyone claims it can't happen with a heavy boat, especially when you're deliberately pushing hard in conditions like those shown in the video. No cruiser in his right mind would be doing that....

I reckon they have those green hats in case they get blown overboard. Good Luck with that.

It's amazing the things we do for fun. I've been in water so rough, many would have gone to see Davy.

The old man kept us alive.

    12 foot skiff's

The 18's get the headlines but some truly inspired insanity goes on in the 12's! Number one rigs had 600 sqft kites back when... on a 12ft 2 man boat you have to be just a little mad.

Yep... it kinda didn't go to plan. What can you say, hopefully "we" learned from it.

I'm going to try to write the story. It's been 36 years since we took the trip through the canal (Panama). I'll start a new thread, we'll see how it turns out.

Zed, why don't they just put wings on those 12-ft skiffs, and get 'em up off that bumpy water? Looks they're flying most of the time anyway....

They are insane... basically that is the reason. You don't so much sail downwind as hook in and hold on, its closer to being fired downwind by a big potato gun... the level of control, in my limited experience, feels about the same!

    Foils would probably help heaps!

I really don't know! I'd guess 2x knots tops, but I could easily be corrected.
