I enjoyed the movie even though it lacked English subtitles. The building was contemporanious with my father. My friend Dr. Lemmer's ancestors came from there to South Africa, from whence he came to Florida.

I have some doubts about that. Motorizing has contributed to safety, no doubt, but safety was not the main reason for its adopting, in my opinion, but the need of undersizing crews. A major safety improvement in small fishing boats was the adoption of full decks for sea-going ones.
    Cheers.

    So, then.

    Where are we?

The port is on a island.

The passenger boat is serving ports in two countries and operates in relatively protected waters with nearly no tide.

We are in the Northern Hemisphere.

While we wait for Guillermo to get back from the movies, just for kicks, what is the highest navigable waterway in Britain?

Well, its always claimed for the Huddersfield Narrow. Don't know definitively, but it does pass under the Pennines close to where the M62 is the highest motorway in Britain. It never seems to close for snow, and rumour has it that they can heat the road surface...

Bad rumours about bad goings on too in the Standedge tunnel (longest canal tunnel in Britain) - people disappearing off the back of canal boats in the dark...

There's some brilliant canal engineering at Marple, just on the Manchester side of the Pennines, and Bingley five rise just up the road. I love the Victorian 'can do' attitude to engineering - the Stevenson lighthouses for example. Best and scariest Canal engineering is the Somerset levels coal canal submerged caisson lock though. Makes me shiver to think of it!

BTW, there's a programme on BBC iplayer about water at the moment, and it featured the amazing and vast cave system under Tallahassee...
