I would guess the Japanese released it to refute the Sea Shepherd claim that they deliberately rammed the Ady Gil while she was sitting dead in the water....

I have no experience with a sat phone or F55, but my laptop has internet service through Verizon that will handle files that size with no problem at all, anywhere there's cell phone service; I can play graphics-heavy games like World of Warcraft on it.

US$1000/month unlimited up and down subject to available bandwidth... maybe more in the southern ocean as geostationary satellites are not easy to sight being in a geostationary orbit over the equator...

    Good morning!!
    Wow such interest in fishing.

I dont think the Whale is endangered any more however those that said it was endangered have managed to keep the "protected species" catagory in place.

Just to get some important facts straight.

They are not illegal whaling, they are allowed to catch a certain number for scientific purposes.

    Piracy is without doubt illegal.

Jeremy Clarkson has infact licked a Turkish toilet bowl.

The japanese should say that due to the interference of there trade the meat they have cought has deteriated and they now need to catch some more.

I'll stick to my Verizon account then, as long as there's a cell tower within reach. I'm paying US $60.07 a month for unlimited service. But I guess there aren't a whole lot of cell towers in the Antarctic Seas....:p

I thought Verizon had a 5 GB / month CAP on the cellular data?

Very sad to see them destroy this boat :(

Cripes --how many VDO's are ther of this totally "unexpected" collision.

Maybe the batboat was crap and hey lets sink it with some insurance and gain max publcity for our quest also.

    Something fishy going on here.

Well...they called it "unlimited" several years ago, when I signed up for it. But I just checked, and waddya know: their definition of unlimited these days seems to be 5 GB a month.

The only thing I can figure is that I'm grandfathered in from an earlier plan that honestly did offer unlimited service. I use it to death and never get charged more than $59.99, plus $.08 for some sort of surcharge.

That includes a whole lot of hours on World of Warcraft. I work away from home, and WoW is where I get together and socialize with my wife and sons online. We quest together, shoot the bull, catch up on the family news and all that for hours a day. And since I don't get a newspaper and don't have a TV, my computer is my connection to the rest of the world, too.

And yes, it saddens me to see such an inglorious end for the boat; it deserved better. But when you read through past news articles where Watson is boasting about the black paint job with carbon flecks so they can sneak around in the night, it becomes obvious that it was already reduced to a squalid existence.

    Outrage!

The only "Outrage" I see here, is the facts presented by these SeaSheperd Folks, that they were actively trying to interfere with the Safe Navigation of another Ship, on the High Seas. There are International Rules of the Road, that have been around since BEFORE Moses, on how to navigate Ships at Sea, and these Yahoo's see fit to ignore ALL of them, in pursuit of their Private Agenda. It is Acknowledged Seamanship, that the smaller, and more agile vessel is responsible to stay out of the way, of the larger, less agile vessel, PERIOD. If you watch the Vids, the Sea State is such that the larger ship is just barely making headway. Certainly much less that its 12 Knot full speed, and from the bow movement, was having trouble maintaining what little headway it had. Yet the smaller vessel was coming up from astern, and as the overtaking vessel, was in FACT, required to maintain separation and maneuver to avoid any collision. This they did NOT do. There also was a second Ship in the area that WAS a SeaSheperd Vessel, that was NOT in close proximity to the Collision, but was part of the Harassing Navigational Threat to the larger Vessel. This second vessel did come render Aid to their fellow Mariners, so the larger vessel would not necessarily be required to and render Aid to the stricken vessel, considering it had been under the threat to Safe Navigation from BOTH vessels. If I were to be the Investigating Officer of an Admiralty Court for this incident, I would strip the Masters License from both SeaSheperd Skippers, and throw that whole bunch in the Brig for Reckless Navigation on the High Seas, and Fine the Vessel Owner a Significant Sum for allowing their vessel to be used in this manner. To bad we don't Hang Pirates any more.... Now we just let the SEAL's Shoot them...

I keep hearing that the whaler turned to stb. to ram the sillyboat. It seems obvious to me that they were trying to AVOID it and the AG was deliberately trying to get hit at that point. Apparently many people have an attachment to that boat and to set up its destruction is a PERFECT ploy for garnering sympathy. The Japanese have in every regard conducted themselves in a professional and seamanlike manner. The emotions attached to this largest of the protein sources is astounding.
Greenpeace, a MUCH saner outfit than Sea Shepherd, visited my town of Homer with the Esperanza. They were cited for illegally dumping effluent - they dumped their **** in my harbor! Ecowacko's tend to be...well, wacko - combine wacko with violent, like Sea Shepherd, and there is a recipe for getting your batboat totaled.
One more thing, spending a number of years on a research ship has given me a perspective on environmentalists, in general, that I'd like to share; Eat the "no meat" spinach lasagna because it is what is served, and wait for the yowling by the dredlocks crowd when they wake up from sleeping all day. Vegans mostly have a moral obligation to not consume products derived from animals - unless it tastes really good (chocolate chip cookies - just throw them up later and you will have not technically eaten any eggs)! I suppose an egg isn't really an animal and that should be okay, and eating it should be no worse than aborting a fetus twice a year because "you forgot" to use birth control. In the strange world in which these people live, a whale expert ( I have witnessed this, too) is someone who took an "environmental studies" class and worked one summer on a tour-boat out of Long Island. ("each whale has a "fingerprint" to go along with it's unique personality, te he!" - the markings on a humbacks tail, she was referring to) .While fourteen humbacks got their tongues eaten out by orca last year, they want to stop all boats from using the ocean here until we can figure out "why" and make sure humans did not somehow cause the behavior. They want to shut down mining, fishing, industry, etc. but they also want those same industries to pay for their healthcare. In no way do I mean to demean those who don't eat meat or WHATEVER for personal reasons - only those with the "attitude"...Personally, I think that the Japanese are doing the whales a favor to help them escape the end brought by the orca.
Can we squeeze some patchouli oil out of these people to help pay for some of the damage they've done?

I'm not sure the 'sillyboat' was trying to get hit; I think that would take bigger cojones than the average activist has. While they'd like you to believe they're willing to die for their cause, I doubt many of them really want to.

It's more likely that whoever was at the helm of the Ady Gil got confused and distracted when the rest of the crew started hollering they were about to get run over, and just kind of reflexively gunned it.

But there's no doubt at all in my mind that by the rules of the road (not to mention common sense), it was their responsibility to stay away from the whaler and avoid the collision.

I think that there are alot more perilous types of fishing being conducted illegally in the world's waters...BUT...the sea shepherds are okay with me and what they are doing to preserve whale stocks...HOWEVER...they need to make sure their little million dollar bat boat or whatever or even the smallest zodiac does not get run over in this fashion. This was going to happen sooner or later...didn't think they'd be caught like a dead duck like this though....thought it would be more like two objects in motion kind of collision...thats my take..so THIS thread is where everyone's been all night...

Too stupid for words is this while children die of lack of water and food in Zimbabwe, for some reason we go ga ga for a whale.

Thanks for the deduction anonymous weeny that can listen to someone elses point of view --bigot.

Until these bigoted drug soddened junkies are replaced by sensible human beings that have a brain and know how to negotiate , whales will keep dying.
