eh, I'm over it. I know why my design didn't win or didn't even have a chance. It was incomplete. Given that the pros were entering, I would have been surprised if the outcome had been any different.

    I like that hull, Will.

    damn...Santa's coming...better get to bed. :p

May I inform you peers, that the thread opener Daniel Skira decided to quit his membership on this Forum!

Repeated personal attacks by some of our well known drivel and destruction experts, made him decide to leave.

We have lost a well respected NA with a sensible hand for drawing classical beauties.

A man of good temper and a sense for harmony and nice behaviour.

It is a pity that such people are pissed off here by two or three internet rowdies.

    Regards
    Richard

    Richard,
    That is indeed distressing.
I'm afraid that he is not alone. Ad Hoc - another experienced NA - has chosen to stop taking part as a result of the actions of one of the other contributors.
I have been a member of this forum for as long as most. I arrived as an unqualified enthusiast. The members helped me through my qualifications and over the years have taught me at least as much as I learned from my formal design education. I didn't always see eye to eye with them, and on occaisions was a bit taken aback by their apparent manner, but to lose even one is a loss to us all.
For what it is worth, I shall send DS a message emploring him to return. I hope that other will do the same.
And for those of you that think taking personal pot-shots at other members is some kind of web-sport, you need to take a good look at yourselves. You don't only demean your self, you f@#k it up for the rest of us. Get a life

Richard, this is really sad, Daniel is one of most experienced and reasonable colleagues here!

I never take it too serious. In case of personal attacks report moderator and say off-line for couple of days, enjoying family, drawing and fishing :)

Yes Will, I know. John (Ad Hoc) informed me by mail accordingly. We try to do some business together, so, there is more going on outside of this platform.

You are in very good company with your attempt to get Daniel back! Many of the real experts have expressed the same wish.

I am overwhelmed by the mass of PMs and mail I receive on this topic. It shows the majority here knows to value some people right.

Unfortunately the uneducated minority blows the trumpet louder!

Well Albert, some of us have the ability to ignore injuries, some have not.
Daniel got seriously ill when one of the ****** was stalking him and attacked him by mail. (for supporting me in one case)

For these softer tempered, unagressive sort of people there too soon is a loose, loose situation coming up. And consequently they give up.

Bad luck for all of us, but I doubt we will see Daniel coming back.

Ad Hoc may stay with us, but on a much lower level of contribution. (it was mainly the same stalker who pissed him off)

    Regards
    Richard

Hope Daniel is feeling better, best regards to him. Sorry for his decision but I respect it.

I know that my entry for the PMM was a little light in some of the documentation and that was enough to bump me out of the running. However, I'm sure that my design as well as others addressed the all criteria of the contest, ie having a large dog aboard, bridge clearance, etc.
As an old fart with bad knees I don't like climbing ladders in doll house accomodations. If I had to lift a large dog aboard and from cabin to cabin it would make me very grumpy. As others have said here, a 32' boat is too small to be comfortable in for anything over a weekend.
If one of the stated uses is canal cruising, I wouldn't want to have to remember to lower a mast each time I approached a fixed bridge. All in all I believe that the judges could have done better. However, that is just my opinion.

As a consumer, not a designer, but one that is interested in design, I have to say that I'm rather baffled by the choice of winning design. I mean no disrespect to the designer - Mr. Tanton's long success is testimony to the fact that he knows what he's doing.
But, to my mind, the boat falls way short on a number of the primary design goals. Two in particular:
    Where is the tender storage?
And did he simply forget about the dog?

The judges (and the magazine) would do well to publish at least some of the more complete designs and perhaps expalin what they did and didn't like about them. Some of these comments may upset the designers, but at least they'd know where they went wrong, in the judges minds.

no disrespect to old farts...I'm on the verge

But I'm pretty sure the criteria mentioned 'young-ish' farts. I don't think there was a requirement that the dog would have to be able to make it to the flybridge for those designs which had one.

Not all documentation from the winners was shown in PMM. Having worked with Y-M, I'm pretty certain one of the reasons he won was because his documentation and detail was comprehensive. As a professional designer, that is as it should be. The other 'winners' were farther from the design criteria I believe than Y-M's design was. Some of us may have had a better design, but clearly we did not fully meet the criteria. Heck, I know for sure that MY design was better than Y-M's (I kid ;)).

Honestly, I think Y-M hit it on the head. 32' is fine for a young couple and a dog. We have a 30' sailboat and somehow manage to enjoy ourselves and we are a family of 5. This past few years in the industry have shown that a lot can be done with a little and it's refreshing to see folks like American Tug and Nordic Tug getting back to the sub 30'ers.

I have no problem with the winning design. I do have a problem with the premise of this particular 'competition'. But, as stated, any competition is for the most part highly subjective. It's like olympic figure skating. You might be the best figure skater out there, but if the Russian judge didn't like your music selection, that could be the nail in the coffin.

You have to enter to win.

I'll be glad to send to anyone, the article I wrote about the design.
Might clear a few questions. Create others.

That would be really cool, Y-M. I would certainly be interested in seeing your design brief.

Thanks for your willingness to share.

Yes Tanton, that would be great. I will happily be proved wrong!
Frustrating that eben with the winning design, PMM were unable to publish all the relevant documentation.
Is it something you could post here, or would you rather send the docs by email..?

Well, I've been following this thread for a while. All I can tell you is that my wife and I saw this design and loved it, even before the results for the competition were out, and we're planning on having it built. Sure, we're hoping to modify a thing or two, such as a gate/door to swim grid and add some davits to hang the dinghy, as suggested by YMT, but overall, we think it has everything we need in a nice small package. 32ft may be small to others, but we've logged much more time in much less space that to us, this boat has lots of room.
