I couldn't have picked a worse time of year to build this damn thing... i gotta find the decoys.

 

Hmm, got the motor tonight from monster scooter parts... What else do I need in order to start this things? Switch, solenoid, etc?? I"m lost. Does anyone have any experience with these things? I ordered a kill switch and tank and didn't get it in the order, so I gotta call them...

Does anyone have any other suggestions on motors?

 

Kill switches are easy. Any (sealed for sparks) small toggle will do. Check your auto parts store for their assortment. Is it big enough for a starter motor? Otherwise just starter rope. If it has a starter motor, a momentary switch may be adequate. A solenoid may not be necessary for such a small engine.

"As far as the motor, I got two conflicting answers so I'm not going to be much help other than the guy's screwed until he can find someone with the answers. I was told by the scooter store where I bought the motor "All I needed was a key switch between the red and black wires and the battery connection. Seemed simple but then I asked if I needed to have a fused system and the answer I got was "not nesseccary"! I wasn't getting a warm fuzzy feeling about that answer. I took my motor down to a scooter store here locally. The guy really didn't want to talk to me since I didn't buy the motor from him. I finally got him to explain that on the scooters there is a solenoid/amperage resistor that the key switch attaches to and the battery attaches to. He said without it I'd burn up the starter attached to the motor. I asked about the soleniod and what I needed. He said it depends on the scooter manufacturer. He wasn't going to offer any suggestions after I told him I was building a mud motor for a duck boat. I guess he was afraid of a liablity issue if the information was wrong."

What is that wire that is wrapped up supposed to go to. I know all dumb questions like mine need answered, so thanks in advance.

I assume that the red/black wires from the motor go to the battery, where a switch would be in between.

ground my *** .....thats the live feed for the motor ...put the motor back on the engine put neg to engine case and positive to the lead from the starter . It should crank over ...BUT with a bike engine you need to be able to stop it once it starts ...the kill switch shorts out the ignition rather than turning it off llike a car ...so before you try to start it make sure you can stop it !!!

Your start cable should go through a solenoid but if you use a simple battery switch on/off that will be fine to turn the starter motor on and off
You will have to check out battery charging wires as you did not show them

 

Other wires

The only other two wires coming out of the engine are red and black...close to the spark plug...

 

As Pistinbroke pointed out the wire in the picture is you hot lead to the starter motor. I had the same electric starter on a scooter motor I built into a mini longtail. The starter button can be wired directly into the wiring on either the positive or negative lead to complete the circuit or you can utilize a starter solenoid /relay if you wish to put the starter button up on the handle. I would recommend using at least 8 guage wire for your ground cable. I have wired this same starter both ways with no problems. The red/black wires by the spark plug are the engine ground wires so you can shut it off when desired.
