sailboat designing or just plane motor boat designing??

can any1 show me how to design a sail boat. something i can just do as a hobby in my spare time. not nesissarily to build but something that could be built.

just lay out the steps for me on how to design a boat (by hand).

any1 help plz?

 

Start by learning what makes a boat do what it does and why they are shaped the way they are. Some good starting points are:
The Nature of boats by Dave Gerr
Elements of boat Strength by Dave Gerr
Preliminary Design of Boats and Ships by Cyrus Hamlin,
Skene's Elements of Yacht Design 13 edition edited by Kinney
Yacht Design and Planning by Chapelle
Common sense of Yacht design by Herreshoff

That should give you a decent base to begin dabbling. Some study on the various materials they are built out of wouldn't go amis along with more on sail design and construction and some on engine configurations.

Lewisboats has given you good suggestions for basics. Boat design is not a process that can be summed up in simplistic terms. There is some math involved, some physics, some general principles, and ultimately some argument among the peers. Almost anyone with a pencil and a scrap of paper can design a boat. BUT the boat may or may not float, it may or may not actually sail, it may or may not be a reasonably safe and or seaworthy boat. That is where study and experience come into play.

 

It may also be a pretty boat or an ugly one..... A boss told me once; "there's almost the same amount of work involved in building an ugly boat as in building a pretty boat".

 

AH...well...aesthetics is a whole 'nother kettle of fish. The successful designer is part artist, part engineer and part something else. Unfortunately I claim 0 for 3 and continue with simply dabbling.
