Our plans call for a mast post/base made from oregon/douglas fir, just wanted to know if anyone has opinions regarding the suitability of this timber for this application.

From what I have found online oregon has a average density of around 420 - 550 kg/m3, the lower figure being New Zealand plantation, which is close to where we are so may be indicative of local supplies, then again maybe not.

I guess the crux of the matter is, is a harder timber more suitable?

    Any suggestions?

    Many Thanks.

Douglas fir is a softwood that has very good strength and stiffness properties. I will specify it for masts if spruce is not available. Spruce is the best for its strength and stiffness along with light weight, and Douglas Fir is a little heavier.

With construction like you show in your plans, that post is pretty big. You won't have any trouble with it in Douglas fir. Stick to the plans.

    I hope that helps.
