Alas, no. It is Manfred Curry's 1920's Aero fully restored. I would pay good money to have it though.

Absolutely, John Swarbrick -along with the best aircraft: Spitfire, Mosquito, P51, Concord and others - yachts like the Scandinavian Metre boats, Newick's racing trimarans, March's Tornado - definitely works of art. Now if I want to inflame, what yachts don't make it? IMO the AC designs,

 

Gary Baigent ~ I have models of a Spitfire and Concord sitting on my bookshelf: I like the look of them but would not consider them a "work of art", I consider them as a " work of engineering", and a form (geometry) that from my understanding I relate to as highly resolved.

Now, a "Scandinavian metre boat" I do consider to be a "work of art". I can separate the sailing function from the geometry that some designers can manifest in a the form they create : How do some designers evoke such response from a person contemplating their work ? ~ how can a yacht design to be considered a "work of art".

Interesting discussion. I don't believe you can separate out the "Art" from the "Engineering". No matter whether it's a car, boat, or airplane, the design is (perhaps must be?) a mix of art and engineering. The variations come with the mix. An AC boat may well be a great deal (of) engineering, but there is art in the detail and makeup of each component. In something like a Newick Tri the art and engineering are really hard to separate, perhaps the mix is 50-50 as the elements can't be separated.

Or are 4 wheels attached to a box purely engineering with no art at all? But is there not art in stark simplicity, a reduction of all "styling" to basic elements? Thus we look at a Wally and say, "no art there!". But I think there is.....most definitely. Just as a painting by Mark Rothko.....is that "ART", well....maybe...and if you wonder.......

Thankyou for your response. In a very general broadbrush way I agree with you or to possibly better qualify :

The High Court of Australia have reasoned that one of my designs did not posses any real (substantial) artistic expression, as there were constraints in the design of the hull and deck geometry that denied the design as being a work that could posses artistic merit. The judgment does not specify what the constraints were.

I built the hull/deck model by hand and eye just as Captain Nat executed the shaping / creating of form.

 

Time to move on. The high court has made its decission 5-0. You lost. Next time register your design.
