I just want it sort of easy for an "old fart".... Not finalised on the HF aerial but prolly haul it up as needed (allows spectra & replace that every 3 years option?)

I (while there is reasonably priced fuel), expect to not be recalcitrant when it comes to using the "iron sails" - Not lack of sailing - - fear of weakness and ageing (I am feeling less and less bulletproof every day..... f---it.... but still yearn for sail power on a fair day - or should I acknowledge fate and go power as per the Chamberlin C10 - which Lovely Lady liked.... and realise the days of sail are over for me & that I should stick to a tank of diesel and ignition keys....? and cruise at 10 to 16 knots whenever I want to go on 2 x 50 hp engines....

 

50' would not be too far out of order, Seawind 1200 is around 60'...

 

Wire will give you 5 to 7 easy, 5 to stay insured, IF spectra is only 3 years I'd prolly not bother... plus with wire you can run a fixed HF antenna, you don't want to be frigging with HF setup everytime you need to squawk, especially in a Pan or Mayday type situation. Deck based whip if you must but the range is better from the backstay (so I believe)... You want to carry a whip or a backup setup of some sort... loss of mast should not take out your comms. Back stay + a whip is good.

 

yes but Heinz with the arrival of of GMDS would anybody be listening other than on VHF and that as we know is basically line of sight! OK may be a few ham radio guys out there but MF and HF long gone - unless it's be reintroduced in the last few years since I've been ashore!

I really don't know, is it still apart of Cat1 safety requirements? If so I'd be using that as my guide. VHF is a given... mebe HF is debatable these days, its something I have not thought about for a long time, an assumption on my part ---> What else gives the range? What do cruising yacthies use these days?
