They don't need to be big... all depends on the rig design. Too many ifs and buts, there is no absolute correct answer here... it all depends.

    hey walraz
Seiing as you can t answer lazy
BOT is board of trade, number, what was / is yours, were you ever a mate?
regarding my post about navigation the old way, , many of you so called (mates and trawler skippers) should have known what I was talking about, but hey there was deathly silence, it was plain to see that navigation, by sextant stars, moon sun, was foreign to you Even though it was mandatory for a deck officer(and still is) to know these methods
, so I knew that some of you, were not what you said you were
Walraz. if indeed you were a mate, can you tell US your B.O.T number
can you tell us about a days work, by traverse? I think not Can you tell us the name of the ships you were on
You have plainly never sailed a sailing yacht in your life, yet you try to tell us abt furling head sails
Sad man!! i would not bother to confront the likes of you here, if you had not, said" you can not calls Iraqi chlidren under 5 as innocent can you)
tired of you bullc rap,as many have pm,d me, (he contibuted zilch)

I just want it sort of easy for an "old fart".... Not finalised on the HF aerial but prolly haul it up as needed (allows spectra & replace that every 3 years option?)

Oops, where did I get that number from 40 ft or so? - (maybe my fear of heights as tinitis (is that the spelling for cicadas in the ear?) and deafness has induced a loss of balance)

I (while there is reasonably priced fuel), expect to not be recalcitrant when it comes to using the "iron sails" - Not lack of sailing - - fear of weakness and ageing (I am feeling less and less bulletproof every day..... f---it.... but still yearn for sail power on a fair day - or should I acknowledge fate and go power as per the Chamberlin C10 - which Lovely Lady liked.... and realise the days of sail are over for me & that I should stick to a tank of diesel and ignition keys....? and cruise at 10 to 16 knots whenever I want to go on 2 x 50 hp engines....

Wire will give you 5 to 7 easy, 5 to stay insured, IF spectra is only 3 years I'd prolly not bother... plus with wire you can run a fixed HF antenna, you don't want to be frigging with HF setup everytime you need to squawk, especially in a Pan or Mayday type situation. Deck based whip if you must but the range is better from the backstay (so I believe)... You want to carry a whip or a backup setup of some sort... loss of mast should not take out your comms. Back stay + a whip is good.

yes but Heinz with the arrival of of GMDS would anybody be listening other than on VHF and that as we know is basically line of sight! OK may be a few ham radio guys out there but MF and HF long gone - unless it's be reintroduced in the last few years since I've been ashore!

Stu - there hasn't been a Board Of Trade in Britain since well before second world war so if you want to ask silly questions ask the right ones.............and what if any qualifications do you have?

Oh and Stu, did you say your other name was Pid?

so you didnot answer the question,
what was your company, the one you were(mate)_ with?
you must have some doc, copy it into here you have been telling this board abt this job for years now, so can you put up, surely even a dullard like you understands that
i can see you know nothing of the things I asked , for even the lowest officer knows the days work, even in these times

I really don't know, is it still apart of Cat1 safety requirements? If so I'd be using that as my guide. VHF is a given... mebe HF is debatable these days, its something I have not thought about for a long time, an assumption on my part ---> What else gives the range? What do cruising yacthies use these days?

Stu & safie - please use PM to abuse each other or start a thread called "S&S abuse session" please....

Hi Heinz, to sail in Qld waters you now need the 401 epirb or risk a fine from the "thought police"....
