Nice succint comment Mr Monkey, I couldn't have put it better myself, but every body is entitled to their opinions, no matter how wrong or monkey brained it appears to be!

them cats just dont seem like theres alot of room to "live" in,,, if you take a regular sailboat lets say 50' ,, with a cat that same size,, you get half the room?,, and have to go from 1 side to the other to get to different "rooms"?
ta heck with sailing,,, too many damned big werds,,hehe ;)

very well by all accounts, about as high as other boats at same velocity.... or pisses on them in v.m.g. - - - - Ask the man himself? he is somewhere in the SE Qld area? gossip is - to build another..... as is Robin Chamberlin? - - - - seems like a gathering of my favourite designer/builders is happening.....

the whole idea is to start without overly ambitious dreams, like something affordable and manageable
I have seen so many marriages founder, because HE took on something well beyond his dreams
There is a bloke in Yandina on his 4th 46 foot cat, he never knew a thing until a couple years back, they are this foam **** you want to use:)) i could intro you, but he can talk hind leg off a donkey
He uses a 800 sq/ft main on his, that is plain recklessness for a man in 60,s who is not an experienced sailer
here is letter arrived other day
It is from new Owners of Nimbus, , she is getting used, and they kinda make me proud
I could have put that boat into production with pics I am being sent now
It was a struggle sell off the plan
so these people are using her and having fun, I,m trying to talk em into getting to Med , iwould join them for the Red Sea leg
IMO you could start your hull now, hulls in that medium cost very little, nor does the joiner fitout that way when a house is sold, youa re ready to bang in the big bucks
    Dear Stuart,

Hope all is well with you wherever you are. We are sailing along the northern side of the Indonesian Archipelago, which has been a fascinating trip so far. Nimbus II was impounded in Kupang along with about a hundred other yachts, the Immigration Department said that the agent who arranged our CAIT (cruising permit) had been black listed therefore they demanded 10% of the value of the yachts to release them from impoundment. The Indonesian Tourism Department, who sponsored the Rally eventually stepped in after some intervention by the Australia, American, Canadian, French and British high commissions. Corruption is alive and well and there is much competition between the various government departments. On the other side of the coin, the people have been incredibly warm and welcoming.

Nimbus has been performing beautifully in these light conditions, with the MPS up most days, we have sailed using the "vane" mode on the autopilot and outperformed everyone, just a delight. We are able to carry the MPS up to about 65 degrees apparent and by using the vane mode we keep the apparent wind angle constant as the wind speed flucuates. Our course wanders over the ocean a little but our VMG to our next waypoint is always higher.

The operating logic on the boat works extremely well. We run the eutectic AC fridge once a day powered by the generator which at the same time charges up the batteries. Generally this takes about an hour to an hour and a half.. We have the inverter / charger set to charge the batteries up to 29.6 volts and float at 27.6. As soon as the batteries go to "float" we generally shut down the generator. Hot water is all engine heated. Freezer temperature runs at minus 12 to minus 20 degress. Fridge ar 0 to 5 degrees. If we motor for long periods the auxillary alternator allows fridge operation and battery charging. If the fridge is running battery charging is minimal. We may install a stepped regulator on that alternator rather than the internal one to improve that situation.

We now run the auto pilot on "economy" all the time as we find it holds course perfectly well without undue hydraulic motor operation. Keeping the sails well balanced obviously allows that mode of operation.

When in Darwin we purchased a carbon fibre spinnaker pole and set it up with a topping lift and kicker. The lighter weight of this pole makes such a difference to poling out the headsail which really balances up the boat when sailing square.

We are trying to send you some more photos, but are experiencing difficulties. Will send in separate email, meanwhile we send you our warmest regards,

    Warwick and Maryon

i will give you another bit of well learnt info
never build out of the square, build what people want, nothing radical, that way if things go wrong, you can quit easily, or easier You build something like that photo and , it is well to put it mildly, that is plain awful
A forty foot cat, holds a lot of people, a very social platform, A boat where everyone says, "she looks nice" is the way to go, , if 95% say" what the hell is that" you are going wrong

I see little point, when cruising, in sailing to windward - - especially a hard bash in "stormy weather" - - happy to sit it out and move when things are more favourable and pleasant....

If resale value is important heed these words, people will not touch anything odd. At the very least make sure you can convert it to a standard rig somehow. Those Revolution 38's with the bendy free standing rigs, strong, practical, easy to use and a bugger to sell.

From the stuff you have written you have not done much sailing?
If you had, you shud know that sometimes you may sit for weeks ALL boats need windward capability.
Look at it another way, your engine will not fire, you are on anchor, the shore is to leeward(thats downwind) , the weather is picking up, its black, , the wind starts to howl, the rode goes quiet, that means it's not holding, you wife is scared, can you beat off this shore?

    JMO...

In my book any boat must be able to claw its way off a lee shore in heavy air/sea state without a motor. Anything else is dangerous, poo happens, you never plan it that way but poo happens ---> I know that there are plenty of cruising tubs that can't do that and they, in my book, are a danger.

    I feel like being a little mean spirited - - -

    Kindly read my lips? did I imply the boat shouldn't? - - see my post 20? - - - -

My reputation as a Grumpy old ******* is under threat - someone implied I was becoming boringly nice?????? - I have got to maintain a status of being grumpier than Germain Greer (I look younger and better kept than her.... )

Sorry I have a headache and do not feel like it now (argueing/debating - & I am not a bloody old woman either....) hehehehe

Keep the advice and insults coming....... please?

So riggers splendid, on this 39ft x 24ft cat - - with a 36ft stick - - 4 or 6 masthead stays (+ one midship front for blade/storm jib at around 3/4 - 24ft up), what would I need by way of stick size and standing rigging & replacement schedule? masthead anchor, strobe above radar dome at 3/4?, P & S lights on coach-house roof HF and VHF hauled up on aft halyards (also for bosun's-chair) - their only use.....

    What have I missed?

That sounds short Mas? The little ol SW24 carries 35ft of stick!

Why not five stays for the rig pictured, one in each corner and a central head stay for the single head sail (assuming heavier air usage?) You could run diamonds to stiffen the mast... IMO the great big spreaders are a bit redundant. No idea about spar size, thats for a designer to work out.. it looks to me that the main loads would be compression and if you stiffened the mast using two sets of diamonds, one swept fwd, one aft you may be able to use quite a light section... still thats one for a smart man with a pen, slide rule, pocket protector and professional indemnity insurance. :p

You'd run the HF aerial in one of the back stays with insulators no?

Ramblings to ingnore if you wish ya grumpy auld sod :p :p :D
