Jim Young Trailer Sailer

Hi there and hello from sunny Cairns,

I am looking at a 20 foot Jim Young Trailer Sailer to buy but cannot find a thing on the web. Is this a good or bad thing? Any ideas or clues on the performance etc of this boat type? Any info appreciated.

Hi Ally,

I know this is a late reply, however I just came across it and joined! However the Jim Young 6m is a Water Ballest ply trailer sailer designed as you mentioned by Jim Young from New Zealand.

The version also comes in a 5m, 6, 6,7 and 7m I believe, however I am no expert.

I am currently restoring a 6m Young which was built in Portland South West Victoria. The boats are qute quick and manoverale but the best aspect is the weight whcih is approx 550kg when dry. This means that it can be towed easily by a normal car.

I am also looking for anyone else out there with a Young for more information although I do have the original plans plus access to the people who built her.

Jim Young is well and truly retired and was before web sites became common and as such you won't find a web page with details of his designs. It used to be possible to buy his plans from Roger Hill, although IIRC this is no longer the case. If you are genuinely looking to buy plans try looking Jim up in the Auckland phone book.

 

There is one sailing regularly at Port Kembla sailing club. I crewed for the owner last week and will do so again next Saturday. Next Saturday is the last day of sailing season. The owner is looking for a couple of crew for regular racing, I'm just helping him out to finish off the season. This boat has a 16 foot skiff set of sails and is a bit over powered once the breeze gets over 15 knots. Impressive boat tho, especially reaching. The owner is buying a new set of sails for next season with several reef points.

I have experienced the same issues with overpowering over 15 knots, however for a boat that light I think this is quite normal. I simply reef down when the winds get aout 15 and it is good. Keeps you on your toes I have found.


I am looking to race next season as well and would be keen to chat with the owner of the boat you sail on out of Port Kembla.

I am also keen to talk to all other owners out there of this great design (ues I spelt it right this time).

I never had anything to do with Jim's sail designs, but just felt the urge to say that the 40' Vindex gameboats he designed were brilliant for their time.

Name's like "Simone" and many of the others taken from the moulds were (and some still are) regarded as amoung the best gamefishermen in the Cairns heavy tackle fleet. And to be the best in the Cairns fleet is to be the best in the world.

Hi there

I have a young 7.8 metre water ballasted trailer yacht.
I've had this yacht for around 6 months now and after doing a major restoration of her she is now sailing.
We have had her out several times now and every time I sail her I become more impressed with the design.
Ply construction is easy to repair and maintain, the boats are light, easy to launch, retrieve and tow.
Most importantly they sail beautifully and are really safe. We've had ours out in 40 knots with a reef in and she still went to weather fine. I've also laid her over with the spreaders in the water thanks to a snapped kite pole and she had no tendancy to capsize and popped back up without shipping any water once we got the kite under control.

She's certainly not a sportboat greyhound like the young rocket but is major bang for buck and a very nice spacious design.
I'm very happy with performance
