    Moth on Foils L/B

    Pi, somewhere on the Moth forum(I think) I read one guys take that the Moth hulls are "squared off" instead of round because,for the same displacement,this allows a narrower hull with a higher L/B ratio. I've read John Illet comment that the flat hull helps the boat get foiling sooner in marginal conditions.

    Moth on Foils Fastest Sailboat Under 21'

    This is from the Foiler One GP thread under the sailboats forum:
    "This is a quote from the Fed week 2004 website sailed on Chichester harbor in the UK:
    Tacking under East Head shore proved the favored course except for the Foiler International Moth
    sailed by Simon Payne whose speed over the water
    and with most of his hull out of it, was such to make little difference to his course, crossing the finish in an amazing 1hr 12 min. almost half an hour ahead of the leading International Canoe..."
    http://www.hisc.co.uk/fed2004/fedmonday.htm
    Headlines from a newspaper clipping describing the event: "Moth proves astonishing sight in windy Fed Week". From the article:" And they were certainly rewarded this year, by the amazing sight of Simon Payne's state of the art International Moth, by far the fastest craft on-or more correctly-over the waves.
    Designed to lift up on to foils on its daggerboard and rudder, it literally flew over the water, outpacing the fastest ribs and drawing urgent radio calls from the committee boat for it's location.
    Payne won every race in his class, the fast handicap, by a huge margin. His yardstick number already low could have been lowered to that of the fastest Olympic dinghy, the Tornado catamaran, and he would have still headed the fleet."
    =====
    This occured THREE years ago!
    "......still headed the fleet"---it's not any one thing-it's the agregate of convincing evidence that proves the foiler Moth with Rohan Veal sailing it is the Fastest Sailboat Under 21'around a course. Soon to be followed by many more....

    Doug,

    Just a kind note on all this Moth Foiler stuff...

    You long ago impressed those who would follow what you have to say on the topic. You can tell who they are by the responses you have gotten on this thread.

    You are not going to get anymore folks to agree with you on the, rather irrelevant, matter by dredging-up stuff from three years ago. Most here would agree with you that Mothie Foilers have serious speed potential. Whether they are the fastest boats under 20' (or is it 21', I'm not so sure on this point as it has floated around and around over the postings) is beside the point, my friend.

    All you are doing now is pissing-off the gathered boating enthusiasts with redundant exclamations (ask me, offlist, how I know this) and further alienating yourself from the resource base you will need to complete your current project.

    There's nothing here to win anymore. What is winnable has been won a long time ago.

    Find another method to express yourself with regards to foiling issues and let this bloated topic go the way of all things that have been wrung-out to their fitful conclusion.

    Look back at the reason why you originally posted this thing and see that Moth sailors no longer give a damn about going faster (or they can't) and let the thread pass-on into its rightful place on this wonderful website.

    You do have better stuff to do with your time, Doug. Go forth and do that. We'd all like to see how things go for you.

    Moth on Foils Fastest

    Thanks, Chris. But this recent spate of postings started with my post on Rohan Veals beating of a fleet of RSX windsurfers.* Sorry, but that is big news. And when I looked again at Rohans total record I realized that he had reached another milestone: the Fastest Sailboat Under 21' around a course. Now ,that too is news Chris-with important implications for the progress being made by these little foilers.
    How anyone could be upset by exciting news like this is beyond me.

    :D Very good

    BTW: I met these guys in Valencia

    [IMG]

    Didn't know who I was talking to ... :eek:

    I asked the question, "Could you scale the technology up and make a 18-20 foot boat?"

    The answer I got from Andrew was "No, about 14-15 feet is about the limit."

    Scaled Foolishness

    Shortsightedness sometimes strikes the best among us. Maybe he should tell Thomas Jundt with his foiling 18.
    Glad to see you back, Mr. Hough!

    He did say that they were looking at a two man version, that's where I got the 14-15 foot figure.

    They were getting ready to launch off the beach when I saw the boat on it's dolly. Andrew came up and started to chat. He was impressed about how much I knew about foiling Moths and the Bladerider (thanks Doug). He gave me the impression that they were thinking about a larger version of the Bladerider for two people. I didn't press for details as Rohan came up and wanted to go sailing.

    Moth on Foils Moth vs 18

    This is from SA. Now, we know that Rohan has beaten a fleet of 49ers and a fleet of Rx boards-so how would he have done?
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++

    [quote name='OneOff' date='Nov 11 2007, 01:08 PM' post='1418310']
    This September a Finnish yachting magazine Pro Sail organized an invitational competition nearby Helsinki. Competitors were;
    -49er skiff (current Finnish Champions)
    -Two Moths (Bladerider and foiling Moth)
    -18 Footer Skiff (Murray design with small rig, big rig being under repair)
    -Formula sailboard (large 11.5 m² sail and deep fins)

    For one day competition three windward-downwind races were set in a bay of sea. Distance from start/finish line to windward mark was about one nautical mile. During the first race the wind speed was about 10 knots. It kept on building up to 16 knots for the last race.

    The clear winner was the Formula board! The second was the 49er. Third was the older of foiling Moths. 18 Footer (with small rig) was fourth. Fifth was the Bladerider.

    Formula board was by far fastest on up wind legs. Only the Moth was close to it. 49er was fastest on downwind but it was not able to catch up the lead Formula. Moths were suffering on maneuvers and were not able to point as high on windward as Formula (nor as low on downwind legs as 49er).
