We may not be "all" crazy, but it sure helps!

    Kaptin Jer,

If you're going to be addicted, fixin' boats is better than many alternatives. We're all a little daft here, but it's a harmless form of crazy. You've surely got a worthwhile project going now, and the only judgement of its worth is how it makes you feel.

I think the Aussies had one 6 pack of Fosters too many while watching the Rugby match. By the way congrats Trev and Buckie!

You guys are/were lucky to get your Kids involved. My son was into Gymnastics from the time he was 5 yrs old. Came in 2nd all around in the National Jr. Olympics when he was 15. Then he decided he was too big, and quit to play power forward for his high school ice hockey team, - gave up a Gymnastics scholarship.
I can't even get my wife to come to the marina, unless it's to bring one of her girl friends by to show off "her" boat. It is a rare time that I have any company at the boat. I'm sure that when it's finished I'll suddenly have lots of Friends, I think that is one of the major draw backs. It is a very lonely thing we do. At first it was a great escape, but over time you feel the need to share. Again, you guys that got your kids and spouses involved were very, very lucky.

    Stu,

Actually, that's a route Kathy and I have discussed for a future trip. She's fussy, though; when eating cabbage she wants a good steak or fowl, wine, and candlelight to accompany.

Safe voyage, my friend. Glad to hear you found another Russian lady. I saw Max's "photo" of the first one, didn't appear to be up to even Frosty's low standards!

BTW, I could be wrong, but your buddy Putin seems to be clearing the decks to make himself PM and stacking the Duda so the term is for life, with future Presidents as figureheads. I'm familiar with the "strong hand at the tiller" argument, but when the position of dictator was created by the Comitia Curiata of the Roman Republic, the powers expired automatically after 6 months or the term of the crisis, whichever was shorter. Every one since has liked the power but found ways to make the title "for life", usually by eliminating all opposition. Your boy's following a classic pattern.

some of my most peacefull moments are when Im working on my boat ,,,sometimes if I dont have money to put into her ,,I just go to the farm and drink a beer or two or so and look at the next step,,only the hope of future sailing keeps me alive ,,if after all is said and done ,,the time and effort will pay off ,if that before I die I can see the faces of my wife and children watching the porpose monkey roll at the pressure wave on the bow ,,,or catching a 45lb red snapper or grouper off a reef ,,or the site of a whaleshark or mola mola sunbathing,,,,,,just once,,,and it will have all been worth it,,,,,longliner

    Longliner,
I'll have a beer with you on that! I do the same thing. I drive the 1/2 hour to the Marina every Sat. and Sunday whether I can afford the whatever it is I need or not. I have to get my fix. But I set myself a sail time. I retire in 2 years, and I want the boat either docked behind my house or with-in walking distance. I want to be able to get up in the morning and go for a sail while my wife is at work (10 years younger). She is a teacher so the summers will be for cruising. That is going to be my reality, because I'm making it so.

You first have to realize that owning a boat makes no sense at all. You spend a lot of money on something that requires you to spend a lot more money so you can work on it. If going out on the boat is the objective it is much cheaper to join a club, rent, or charter. Once you realize it makes no sense then you can enjoy it. If I didn't have my boat to work on I'd have to do all those wifey type chores and I'd end up drinking a lot more. I'd much rather work on something that makes no sense.

You never give up boats. We were all bitten as children and will be passionate about them if only in our dreams if need be, until we cast off for the blue oceans beyond....

there's them who build boats and them as sail them and the odd one or two who actually build 'em and sail 'em! However you do it the important thing is you enjoy it!

Them as builds rarely sails and vice versa! me I come from a family of builders, all we ever do is build 'em, make sure they work and get rid of 'em (bit like wives actually, get 'em, find they don't work, get a new one 'cos they don't like boats) c'est la vie

ooooh yes - there is definitely a real problem here. Take a good look at yourselves and tell me if you like what you see?
Bunch of anti-social, epoxy coated, greasy skinned dreamers wasting their lifes away.
Get back to your families, do something useful with your lives and stop pouring expensive, toxic, expensive metal and chemicals into this already over exploited world.
There, I feel much better now ....
Anyway, I think I have enough epoxy for the boat tomorrow - should be finished real soon now .....

Now don't let that go to your head, Mike - even though it's probably true.. :p
