You got it - the ONLY way to see ice in my book is in inch cubes floating in my glass! doesn't really matter what else is in the glass as long as part of it is some form of alcohol!

Lase mate he's about to bail out - finaly realised what a prat he is (which of course everybody else knew for years but couldn't find a way to tell him!)! Now looking for a way to go with everybody saying how wonderful he is (they will but not for the reasons he thinks!!)

Bit like your Russians mate - not so much clever, more slow learners! I know I've worked with a few - boy are they thick!! And not very well liked - by anybody - including themselves!! (but give 'em their due they are going the right way -slowly!)

Gotta disagree with you Walrus. So settle back, light your pipe, and I’ll tell you why (younger members sigh - oh god he’s off again -and fall asleep).
Years ago (during the last century...and hasn’t that got a nice ring to it...) when I was a working lad oop int’ Arctic we mixed with hundreds of Russians - the crews of the Klondykers (the huge Russian factory ships). It was in the height of the Cold War when our politicians assured us that the USSR (as it was then) was an ‘Empire of Evil’ - intent on murdering the rest of us in our beds.
Those ‘not so clever’ Russians - to a man, and a woman (I’ll deal with them later) spoke a variety of languages - mainly to listen in on the ship-to-ship to locate the ‘best’ catches - even Gaelic. Conversely the ‘natives’ of Reykjavik (our ‘home base’ at the time) also spoke passable Russian. I was ashore buying a few toiletries - the kind of thing a seagoing chappie needs, wrinkle cream, eyeliner etc etc...and overheard a Russian crewman asking for batteries for his digital watch in Gaelic - and the shop assistant replying in flawless Russian.
The Russian crewmen virtually stripped the Icelandic stores of digital watches and colour TVs. I was invited aboard the Lenin and discovered that the crews converted their catch-share and wages into watches and TVs - and could triple/quadruple their money once they got home.
I can also stamp out the legend of the ‘huge lumbering face like a wrestler Russian woman). This might make a sidenote for the ‘Seaman/womanship’ thread.
I spent an evening chatting up a neat little blonde: “Hello darling...and whose little girl are you...” Only to learn she was the skipper of one of the ocean-going juggernauts. Crimson face - wished the floor would open up...etc...
I seems that only the women had a calm enough temperament to handle these vessels in a storm.
To get some idea of the size of these vessels imagine a modern ‘supertanker’ with twin hulls - enough room for three of my sized vessels to enter at one time and unload.
Inside they were equipped with mobile cranes, fork-lift trucks, and plant for cleaning freezing and packing the trawler catches. By the time we’d unloaded and backed out and got our paperwork, our catch would be stored in the holds as ‘frozen’ blocks.
The Russians - great people. Lacking subtlety perhaps - but I can swear, hand on heart, at no time during my years among them was I murdered in my bed.
