Another teaser involving the same displacement question:

If a bulldozer were parked on top of a floating barge, would the barge float higher or lower than if it were suspended under the barge on a cable (without touching the bottom)?

there has to be floatation some where on the bull dozer to off set
some weight unless you made sure there were no sealed compartments

OK instead of a bulldozer lets just say a big block of solid steel.

Sheesh...I knew somebody was going to take it off on that tack!

Ha, who is being teased by this brain teaser the student or the pupil. Well, at least a block of steal removes most variables, but guaranteed some one will ask for more info.

OK Tom, what kind of steel, stainless or mild (not that it really matters but you did say someone would ask and I do like to oblige - occasionally. Specially if it's a dumb assed question!

'Greeny' If you look on your 'posts' you should find an 'edit' button - for your use only! push that and you can respell yer words! I use it all the time, bit like using a spell checker in emails or an 80 year old woman - everybody knows it's there but nobody wants to go there! (somebody's going whinge about his granny I just know it!)

Here's another one. The iron ingots from the ship in the lock are thrown overboard and land in a boat. No change in water level, obviously. They punched a hole in the boat which starts to sink. When the boat is just on the point of sinking there is surely no change in water level.

So what happens after the boat vanishes below the surface?

    Jack,

    No, it was not me.

    Bagger,

I just had to do it. I had come to the right answer before the experiment, but it Was sorta cheating.

    Take care.
