Wooden boat construction- Malaysia

Kastenmarine site is the one that drove me crazy about Phinisi..! and Silolona is the boat that Kasten was involved in. Initially I'm looking into other type of design, no more now, phinisi is still the best for my purpose.Lolona had been to Langkawi a few times actually but I don't have the times to pay them a visit.Thank you for the info on boatshow at Telaga, will get in touch with their local rep here in PD to confirm. If confirmed she will be there, then confirm Ari will be there! Looks like I'll have to shift my vacation to November.
Orang laut, I happen to know from my friends there is a malay lady on tour with the husband and their baby from somewhere in Europe to Australia, in Perth my friends met this couple and met them again in Darwin, then met them again in Port Dickson, they proceed further up the straits maybe to the Northern region, Langkawi,Penang and maybe Andaman..in a 40 footer plus sail boat. They are slower then the Heesen boat but their cost is for sure really small compared to the other boat.
Those Burmese teak price is not a typo..their costing is in USD, converted into Ringgit Malaysia (RM)..make ones hearts miss a beat..! Teak wood from plantation is cheaper.

I will be popping down there sometime Ari but I am not sure just when. I will definately be in the area on the opening day fri the 24th as this is a big Hash House Harrier day. But not sure about the show.

Do you know anything about it? I mean what is it just boats for sale?

 

Am staying over at Pulau Duyong right now... met up with Christoph and had a look see at this gargantuan beauty he's building.

Will be there for the boat show.... but if it's just more people trying to sell me more things that I don't need, then I reckon I'd head over the hill, round the bend and into the corner and check out what this Hash House is all about. From what I gathered, it's nothing to do with hash at all......

Trip to Langkawi

If I manage to get Air Asia special offer rate tickets I might fly the whole family there. If not I will go to Langkawi alone by ferry via Kuala Kedah.
Would like to see some new photo of Naga Pelangi to follow up the progress.
Hash run day..once upon a time I'm one of the hash run guy..this what we called 'merentas desa' during school days, only this is an adult run..so.. socialising around until a bit late at night is typical, with booze around cheaply in Langkawi..maybe it will last a wee bit more late than normal..!

I would like to have a look for any used M/benz S class for sale in Langkawi. Know anybody in that trade ?

I went to Telaga harbour yeterday to have a look and check it out. I talked to Azahar and the marina will have boats to look at. There is also a quite large building being erected on the shore and a big space has had the grass cut. This I assume is for exibition stands. It is free entrance. But if its crap you can get a pint of tiger at the many waterside resteraunts for 5 ringet,--1.50 US dollar.

There is in the Marina a de-comissioned British life boat. This boat actally lives there and during the Tsunami was probably responsable for sinking a few for bieng near it. I think they call it the 'Nelson class' and is built to go to sea under any conditions. If youve never seen one of these things,--- they are awsome.

 

Hi Jack, this is rather OTT, but I was interested in your comment about the RNLI Nelson Class Lifeboat. Does it look like the one in the attached picture? I think there was only ever one built in that class and it would be good to know what happened to it.

It was called a Nelson Class (IIRC) as it was built one of Halmatic's Nelson 40 hulls, most of which were built as pilot boats, harbour launches or even 'gentlemen's motor yachts'. I believe it was configured for ease of towing as it was stationed at Calshott in the Solent, an area teeming with yachts, sand banks, rocky ledges and reefs, big tides, dodgy engines and sketchy navigators. If it is this Nelson class boat, then you would be even more impressed with one the Institution's true 'All Weather Boats'.

Recently the RNLI has again bought some Nelson based boats, but for basic training of navigators and coxswains. With the demise of the UK's commercial fishing fleets, it is no longer possible to recruit the lifeboat's volunteer crews exclusively from experienced professional seamen. Now anyone with a cast iron stomach is eligible, and far more basic training has to done at the RNLI's base at Poole.

I have even heard rumours that some of these current crew members can swim, a skill that was always derided by the more senior crew when I was younger: "If you go overboard son, there's no point in hanging around to drown. Might as well get on with it."

 

Crag -- In that case I am wrong it is not a Nelson class --sorry to have mis-led you. It is the older type, big bow, very low freeboard at amidships and a canoe stern. She has two engines and a snorkel arrangement. She was apparantly from South England and was famous for the lives she has saved. She was completely re furbished by her owner.

Trip to Duyong was fruitful... sorry I couldn't furnish you with photos though naga-pelangi.de is quite up to date with their developments.

As I was there the crew was busy with the final woodworking touches.. cabinwork mostly... making doors and the likes. Saw that most of the fittings are sorted out and just a matter of time to install them. It's MASSIVE! Even the rudder was easily 3m high.

Actually, the photo I posted in "most beautiful boat" thread was Jun Bahtera, built by Hj Abdullah Muda together with Christine @ Rohani. She's a great source of history & customs of the people, plus passionate about sailing & sailboats. I've the highest regard of her, and made me feel ashamed that it takes a French lady to teach a Malay of her own heritage.

Naga Pelangi 1 is now called Tom Yum. The current owner did some modification to the stern... well.... no comment. Attached are photos of Naga Pelangi @ Tom Yum approaching Royal Langkawi earlier this year. On second thoughts... take a raincheck on the photos. Internet connection too congested for this sort of things right now, give it another try in the wee hours of the morning.

Thank you for the correction on Jun Bahtera. Saw Christine Longuet @Rohani when the last time I'm there but never chit chat with her.Read about her quite sometime ago in the media. Can you please send via personal message your contact number in Langkawi ? Hopefully can see you there..if I can make it. Got to send one of the mdms to see a specialist on 23rd. 24th my flight schedule. If madam is not hospitalise..I'll do the trip, if not..there is still next opportunity.
