colinhilton: 3.0 metre Flat-Pack Catamaran
A wooden prototype that improves portability and reduces the weight to a minimum. The length was selected as being half the length of FRP pultrusions, a common length for timber supply, a size that fits a roof-rack and one which can easily be doubled in scale. Planed 2" spars support planed 4-by-1" pine planks, and deck and fins comprise 4-by-2' quarter inch plywood, while static buoyancy derives from a monobloc of insulation foam beneath the deck (not included here). The foam can be left as supplied, or cut so as to form a wedge-shaped underside which would assist the craft onto the plane. The outline is the one which will be tested with a view to kit craft and the progress of these tests will be reported as ever on the associated website at 'panelplane.com'.
