LB ratio & powercat fuel efficiency

I entirely agree with you. For the purposes of my question, if I were interested in other aspects I would have mentioned them :)

LB ratio & powercat fuel efficiency

Thanks David - that's the response I thought but you have written well: there's no simple, universal curve. Damn ...

LB ratio & powercat fuel efficiency

Ad Hoc is of course right - have to scale the displacement and WSA for greater/lesser LB ratio. And thank you for associating directly that my factor of fuel consumption (my measure) is more accurately discussed by talking resistance. I was wondering (perhaps not loud enough ;)) whether...

LB ratio & powercat fuel efficiency

Sorry about that - I hadn’t been pinged for any new reply so hadn’t returned! The boat length is irrelevant unless you can support that there is something in the relationship that breaks down at a certain length (high or low). Otherwise why would we have ready reckoning formulae that have no...

LB ratio & powercat fuel efficiency

Let's say a powercat has 12:1 L:B ratio, and with a certain weight and prismatic and design and engines...and... it makes for a certain fuel efficiency at 12-15knots (which is higher than "hull speed" (1.34x)). Would a higher L:B improve the fuel efficiency (almost certainly yes?), and by how...

    Power cat unlikely performance?

How about twin stub masts, say 20', half way down each side of the boat that run a square headsail (astern or at 45 degrees astern) or twin triangular "jibs" side-by-side up from 45 astern to near abeam? May be easier than a kite. BTW, were their "real figures" better or worse than implied?

    Looking for a design

Hi Rylo, we’re the owners of bluenomads and the cat, Blu Emu. One of the factors of a mono is definitely felt at anchor. Even Dashew has active roll control on their power monos for a reason, and they are purposely (like you) narrow and long. Wider monos would roll less, but there’s few that...

    Another folding cat thread :)

The only CC24 I've seen pictures of was more of a motor-sailer than sailing machine. Have a look in the pictures in the Yahoo! Groups area on the jarcat mailing list (that I look after ). The CC29 was a good sailer that I was on a few times in Morton Bay and did a trip with Ross Turner...

hull shape of cruising power v sail cat

Thanks for that - I'd read it years ago but forgot. I think Malcolm has answered me: (my emphasis) and he also explains a little why boat length (size) makes a difference. I was thinking of around 28-35' boat size originally, but I didn't think it mattered for the principle (I was wrong)...

hull shape of cruising power v sail cat

I've read before about how a powercat has a very different hull shape to a sailing cat (ignoring tris). I can understand that truth if you are planning on flying around at 20+ knots (on either design!). However, say you were designing for cruising (not gulping fuel); why *must* the powercat...
