lloyds is very clear, iso 12215 more ambiguous
yer you need a backing bar. not practical on shell plating and butt welds are not fillet welds, different type of weld.
ISO 12215 and Lloyds SSC suggests otherwise. Double sided continuous fillet welds to all shell plating mandatory.
