A windmill powered boat can sail directly into the wind that powers it. Recently, I put up a page on my website of a simple model to demonstrate direct-into-wind sailing, Direct Into Wind Demonstrator https://windthrusters.net/windoppose.html This model has more drag behind the clr than in...

Your departure will be welcome. Here is a picture of a "fanciful system" being constructed by the multi-million dollar RoRo company Wallenius Wilhelmsen who employ 9,400 people and have a turnover of 3.9 billion dollars. I guess they would not agree with you. I suspect they are not "single issue...

Some like to do things differently, what a boring world it would be if we all did exactly the same things and followed on like sheep. So everything has to be conventional and nothing must change?

It's my thread - it's not up to you to tell me what to say. I will say anything that is relevant. I'm not sure who you think you are. Some sort of moderator?

To return to the subject of alternative rigs and whether they are effective. It's clear that CTR249 is not a fan of wingsails. Perhaps he has not heard of Saildrone. Saildrone is a unmanned sailcraft for data collection which is driven by a wingsail and adjustable tail combination Saildrones...

Of course I don't know. Why should I know. I'm just asking if people are aware of the systems, and I they want to find out - go to the installers and check out their figures and decide if they are true or not. However, I will say that since these systems are up and running now we will see how...

I don't think you could sail around with it without adjusting it? Your tiny Bermudan sail has to be raised and lowered adjusted for different wind directions - eased in gusts, you have to know about sailing to operate it. With the system "Worsley Chap" advocated you don't have to do any of this...

You're talking good sense here. I'm afraid the discussion drifted off topic with CT249 - I really just wanted to find out how traditional yachtspeople viewed the new systems because I really think many of them don't know about them. Here are some pictures...

How can it not be easier than a conventional rig when it is controlled by one lever and can go in reverse at will?

I'm not going to argue with you on the many detail points you have brought up because it would be endless claim and counter-claim. What I do see from your post is that you have not researched the wingsail control system I have patented. You clearly do not understand how it is controlled and...

I do not possess costings of the new sailing systems. I only ask if there is an awareness of them, which judging from the response on here so far is little. The companies fitting these systems on their ships are hoping to obtain benefits of fuel saving - the installers (not the owners) have done...

Worsley Chap does not claim his rig is faster. He only claims it is simple to operate (which is its). There are no races which allow any sort of craft. All of them are for different restricted classes. So you really want anyone who has new ideas to do nothing because "it has all been done...

You can look up the vessels on Vesselfinder.com but the pictures may be from before they were retrofitted. However, if you look up the wind-assist companies, Econowind, Bound4blue, Norsepower you will likely find their "Latest News" where you can see pictures of the installations.

There are so many but I can just mention a few: Econowind have mounted their Ventofoils on MV Ankie and MV Progress and MV Perfect. Bound4blue have fitted their "Efoil" on Longliner "Balveiroll" and "La Naumon". Norsepower have fitted Flettners on "SC Connector" (Owned by Sea Cargo) and "MV...

I don't think ship owners would mount these things on their ships if there were no benefits. These people are on a tight profit margin. They want to save fuel. Do you think these devices would not save fuel? The companies designing these things may have subsidies, but the ship owners do not.

Who says there are no benefits?

I haven't made any claims on savings. I have no idea what you are talking about. If you want to know fuel savings for wind assisted ships you need to look at their websites where they make numerous claims but I expect they are very optimistic! Check out: Oceanbird, Bound4blue, Econowind...

They usually have a small tail behind to keep them pointing windward. But their footprint needs to all be within the beam of the boat - that's why Cats or Tris have been used in the past. Peter Worsley has addressed the transport problem by making them in sections. This has the added advantage...

What? How! !!?X?!xx!

No one said anything against internal combustion engines. But when wind power is available its a good idea to use it to save fuel is it not? Effectively that is what happens already, with nearly all sailing vessels having engine backup. It's a sort of hybrid system - use what's available, but...
