Vectorlam, distributed free by Vectorply corp. is pretty good. Check out www.vectorply.com. You need excel to run the software.

Well, I would say check out the Landing school for design. You can get that finished in one year, and then you will have the tools that you need...not necessarily the experience or common sense...but the tools. You could go to a four year program, but why do that if all you need is one boat...

Leo, It's hard to say, but I doubt that the cutout is the culprit for the porpoising you are seeing. Did moving some weight forward have any effect at all? I would try some real trim tabs instead of the smart tabs if they weren't of any help. I have specified smart tabs, and my general...

I have been a Mac user since 1984 when the mac was released to the public. I onlhy switched over to the PC in 2000 when I was forced to do so for yacht design. After suffering under windows for a number of years, I finally replaced my PC with a new Intel based Mac. I realize that I will not...

You are correct Seaquestor....I didn't have my copy in front of me at work. $40 is not bad for that by the way.

I'm not sure what the Gougeon Bros. fine work on cold molded boat construction has to do with powerboat design, though it is a great reference in any case. Much more stuff in there on sailboats if any actual design information is to be gleamed at all. One of the classic books on powerboat...

Well, there are plenty of books out there that would serve as great resources. Any search of "Americas Cup" in library database should turn up oodles of stuff for you. There are a bunch of scholarly papers out there published in various techinical journals documenting the development of the...

Hey all. I am wondering what to expect the difference between wet and dry engine weights are. I have been working on a weight critical design, and I don't know what the real engine weight is vs the published (this case being a Cummins QSB 5.9 230) The published dry weight is 1360, and that...

Awww cmon DGreenwood. Anybody who is lead to their death as a result of listening to Frank probably deserves what they have coming to them to some degree. I don' think he's fooling around at all, and that is precisley what makes this thread and the previous ones at Sailing Anarchy and elseware...

Frank....it is good that you are proud of your statements. I think you should be more proud of the fact that you are a true legend of the internet my friend. Few people on earth could spawn a thread a keep it going. You the man!

I would not be surprised at all if it was just off 1"....many builders have done worse. Trim tabs are always an easy option to conteract any torque issue. Alternatively, you could always mount the engine with the 1" offset and just live with it, as it isn't going to make a world of difference...

Well....that means your engine is 1" off center. This might be easily recitified depending on how your beds are set up. If this is not the case, then you will have to modify your engine beds to allow the 1" shift back to center.

Without a doubt...HP48GX. Got me through university physics, calculus etc. and it one of the few items that I always know the location of at all times. It is the only device the I still have the manual for. RPN is superior too.

Hello Mario, In my experience, a product called Transderm-scop is the best. This is a patch that is applied behind the ear and is absorbed through the skin. One patch is good for about three days I think. My mother gets sea sick just looking at the water, but she really likes going out...

You could probably do it. An easier solution might be to have the top be in two pieces so that you have a bottom portion that is fastened to the sole, and then the top half slots into that and is secured by either pins or screws. This would be pretty easy to take apart and easier to fabricate...

Hello Striper, I would be interested in helping you out with the design of your boat. Not only am I a designer by profession, but I am also a fanatical Striper fisherman. I actually fish for much more than just Stripers, but they are the major gamefish up here in Boston. In any case, to...

Geez Herb....funny you should find yourself here...on the internet with your computer. Many of us know how to use (and still use) ducks. The fact is though, dealing with others is far easier if all parties are conversant with cad, particularly 3d cad. A hand drawing, while nice, and certainly...

Jesse, Just reread your last post there. Do you have surfaceworks integrated with solidworks, or are you using the two separately? I know you can't fillet two surfaces with solidworks...you would want to thicken them, join them, then fillet them. It still might not work of the edge joining...

Jesse, You might want to check out VX. It's a very powerful hybrid modeller that I picked up last year. I model hulls in Multisurf and them import into VX. From there I can fix any weird surface issues and build structural/interior components. It has far more powerful surfacing than...

That is a one manned 110 fella.
