    Splice Aluminum Mast, keel stepped

I have a 12 meter (42 foot ) dutch steel ketch I am working on (details elsewhere on the site). I have a mast to replace the original sitka spruce mast which was deck stepped (and was setup to pivot / fold down for going through canals I suppose), and I want to replace this with a keel stepped...

Steel Hull - What 2 part epoxy primer in US?

Thank you for all the great info! The boat currently has Amron 235, I am not sure what primer it is over. Are there any concerns with the zinc in 302? I have heard various forms of grumbling about it, but I like that its holding up well on fishing fleets. My boat is a bit more of a ship than a...

Steel Hull - What 2 part epoxy primer in US?

Hello, I have posted before about the 42 foot steel hulled sailboat I am refitting / restoring/ rebuilding. I would like to get the community recommendations on 2 part epoxy primer and paint systems people recommend for a steel vessel available in the US (California). Should I use something...

Temporary Primer / Paint system for sandblast then weld then later paint

I have to do a pass of sandblasting on the exterior of my (likely corten) steel hull to find and then repair damage via welding. I will be doing this in sections, with some weeks in between sessions. There may be areas I sandblast and leave for a while before I weld it closed. Should I just...

Identifying if my hull is Corten?

Are there examples of corten steel hulls that go unpainted? I thought that was just for land usecases?

Identifying if my hull is Corten?

I believe it is corten because of some marketing material of a 5 year later boat from the same builder and designer (Henk Tingen, KOK boatyard netherlands) that was marketed as being made from corten. What lab would I send a sample to? How can I get an expert to run the right type of...

Identifying if my hull is Corten?

Well, as few as possible. I am not sure if I would have an issue putting mild steel in a corten boat, or corten in a mild steel boat. Its not a cost issue, I want to have a strong hull. The thickness is 3mm. Are there any missmatch issues? Should I just put Corten plating in no matter what with...

Identifying if my hull is Corten?

How can I identify if the steel in my boat is corten or not? I want to repair it with the correct steel plates that are the same steel. Thank you.

Ultrasound measurements reported were on clean, bright metal.

42 foot steel round bilge sailboat scantlings

I would say these are representative holes. There are many more over the hull. All holes are below the waterline. not sure about what areas to cut out vs just fill. I understand there are USCG recommendations about not having welds within 100mm of each other. Not sure if that pertains to weld...

42 foot steel round bilge sailboat scantlings

Well I am not going to be building a whole new hull from scratch any time soon. I am going to resurrect this one and sail the high seas with her. Ultrasound generally says 3mm thickness! There are quite a few localized bad areas that I’ll have to chop out, and quite a few holes I will need to...

42 foot steel round bilge sailboat scantlings

I was thinking to do blown in polyiso insulation up to the thickness of the frames(above the waterline). Sikaflex wooden battens behind the frames first so I have something for the interior to screw to. (I don't want to put holes in the frames). Thats based on some books and youtubers. I...

42 foot steel round bilge sailboat scantlings

Rumars, I stand corrected on the particulars, I am trying to gather together as much info as possible from dutch and english sources. Here is a page with many Tingen designs: Damenvlet Amisia type CB - Zeiljachten...

42 foot steel round bilge sailboat scantlings

Thanks for the info Rumars. Yes, from what I understand the boat was professionally built in the J.H. Groos Koninklijke Vorbonden, Holland yard. The designer was Henk Tingen, who was the chief Naval Architect for Royal Huisman at the time. I'll measure a bunch and get some averages. Thanks.
