Doug Lord: F3

The worlds first production RC sailing foiler. Designed and built by me with help from Dr. Sam Bradfield. Foiled in 5-6 mph( 4.35-5.2 knots) of wind. Measured speed so far of 18 knots!

Doug, how do you control the flight level with T-foils?

Hi daiquiri, the F3 RC foiler uses dual independent "wands" on the mainfoils-one on each side. A wand is, in its simplest form, a stick that is dragged in the water to "sense" the surface. A shock cord (or spring in the F3 case) is used to hold the wand against the surface of the water.
On the F3(and Rave 16 footer) the wands have a dual purpose:
      1) to control altitude
      2) to control righting moment.
In essence, as the wind blows stronger with the boat on foils, the windward wand causes the flap on that foil to rise creating downforce and as the leeward wand reacts to heeling force it deflects the leeward flap down creating more lift. The control of RM extends to the structural limits of the boat which is why the full size Rave has a "never exceed" speed posted in the cockpit!
On monofoilers like the Moth the wand simply controls altitude (as above) with no influence on RM.
On both types of boat the wand length can be adjusted to change flight height.
Don't hesitate to ask if I can be of any further help...
      Sail Fast, Doug
