Epoxy is used for many things, most boiling down to adhesive or coating/sheathing requirements. Epoxy has been around for a very short time in the big picture of boat building. It's wide spread use has been well accepted for over 30 years, being available for maybe 50. What are you specifically trying to do? In other words, what process do you want to do by removing epoxy from the equation?

My question is why not use epoxy? And I have been told by a former employer that he was using epoxy in his boats in the 50's.

Some folks have become sensitive to the stuff, others don't like the goo factor or the cost, but it's a very difficult product to beat, considering it's performance in the applications used in boat building.

I don't use it unless I have to, finding more and more ways to avoid using it in fact, but some designs or applications just require it's use.

This thread is also posted and receiving comments, in several other locations on this board. It may become difficult to sort all the replies without combining them some how.

I build plywood skiffs 16' to 24' and sheath the outer surfaces with 6-8 oz. fiberglass cloth epoxy resin. the inside of my boats are epoxy empregnated. I would neverconsider any other method.
