Varnish on a boat takes a lot of maintenance. If fishing is your main goal, it is unadviseable. If you are looking for a hobby, then it is ok.

Thanks Gonzo, I will stick with the paint which I do well and can touch up easily. This boat will stay under cover and on a trailer but will get launched a few times a week in season.
