Thanks, guys. Looks like I will squeeze the boat onto the last trailer, after all. First I need to deliver the TEOTWAWKI and trolling motor to son in Tallahassee. He lives on a lake that only allows electric. New salt water rated trolling motor is in the cards. Hopefully that will happen in the next week or two.

I've always wanted to specifically build an electric powered boat for one of those lakes. A massive Lith-ion battery bank, a huge motor, swinging a monster prop, with only one purpose, to go like stink, for however long the bank will hold. I'd love to just blast past the trolling motor putt-putts, say in the 40's, waking the crap out of the HOA president's shore line, that mandated this foolishness in the first place. They'd try to ban me and I'll challenge them in court, for full compliance with the rules . . . man it'll be fun.

Fanie is right, you know. Boatbuilding is an incurable virus that compels us to build another one, then another..................

Maybe they should have mandatory quarantine for those poor afflicted soles.

While thinking about your 15 KW motor offer, I thought maybe I could cheat. How about a 1.5 liter water cooled motorcycle engine (maybe 80 to 100 HP), driving the usual gear, but sending it's exhaust through, say a pair of 500 CID Cadillac mufflers. Just one of these will hush down a 500 CID Fleetwood, so two .75 liter banks, pumping into these 500 CID mufflers, should make it all but electric sounding. Maybe stuff the tail pipes with fabric softener sheets, to mask the smell? It only has to make a run or two, for the point to be made.

If you use a Honda Goldwing engine, the stock mufflers are sufficient. In stock condition that bike is almost as quiet as a Prius.

I looked into them last year and the 180 hp-enough to make Hoyt's skiff really fly- was about $70-75k with a battery pack.
That's only $10k less than the Supercharged Cadillac 557 hp outboard.... and a 180 gas is usually about $18k. or so.

Electric costs a couple $ an hour to run vs how much for gas? Lots of hours to pay it off and then you'd be near the end of the batteries life perhaps.

I'm beginning to wonder if Hoyt only needs 90 miles of range or so ;)

To be honest, I don't have the confidence in batteries to use an electric motor. You can take only so many batteries. With fuel you can take more, and weather you can charge or not, fuel goes and goes. Perhaps the electric field will be enhanced enough one day to compete, but by then we'll have technology that doesn't require an expensive power source.

You either use wind and/or fuel.

Nothing stops Hoyte to make a simple dagger board/rudder and a few square meters sail to get him going when the iron sail konks in.

His boat may not sail competitively, but it could get you home. Something is always better than nothing.

Oars will work when there is no wind and it will give the Mrs. something to keep her occupied. :D

Now I know i'm really working too hard, You've got the boat practically built and i'm just finding time to get on the thread. Nice work my friend and a dam good looking craft. When I look at your progress mine seems still in the water, maybe I need to get you back up here, I could work on the house(B&B) and you could work on the boat :D . Once again great work ---Geo.
