SITKA SPRUCE BOOM FOR SALE
Hi,
I have a 1964 35' Dutch built yacht that has a 4.5m Sitka Spruce Boom that I have replaced with an aluminium one. The old boom has had a glue failure problem but the Sitka Spuce timber is perfect and it could easily be rebuilt. The construction is three piece with a 30 mmx100mm centre piece and two half round 100mmx40mm cheek pieces. Diameter is 110 mm.

It would make a lovely solid 80mm diametre by 4.5 metre upper boom for a gaff rigged yacht.

All for $100. About $6 per super foot!!

Yes, true, very perceptive of you. Perhaps there are boats and boat builders outside the USA, maybe. Even in Australia (where??)

I don't know the exchange rate exactly, but it looks like you're asking for about $90.00 US. That may be a bit steep for a used damaged spar because one must subtract the waste in making a smaller spar, and the labor to do that is a lot more than starting with fresh lumber.
For example: If you yourself were to reclaim the wood and present it for sale in three boards, including either filling or cutting out screw holes and dressing every side smooth, what have you got? You've got maybe three board feet of good wood.
Aircraft grade sitka is selling for about $12.00-$15 US per foot. So you've got less than $50.00 worth in narrow boards that are usable to only a very few buyers. That's if it's perfect. A better estimate would be half that, and don't forget you've got to reclaim the wood yourself and then find a buyer who needs exactly those sizes.
I won't say good luck selling it for the asking price because I'd have to also be wishing the buyer bad luck, since he'd be buying a pig in a poke.
Reclaiming boat wood isn't easy. There's so much waste involved as boats are highly shaped and they're all different.
