Safe Engine Removal

I am about to pull the KFL out of my '58 CC and need suggestions as to a safe way to do this without, damaging the engine, my ceiling or myself?

Anyone?

You'll need a hoist system strong enough and steady enough to hold several times the weight of the engine. If you don't have access to an overhead crane, you might (with some careful planning and calculation) be able to build a couple of timber A-frames, with a really beefy cross-bar between the tips and a lot of diagonal bracing. You could mount a chain hoist on such a rig if it's built heavily enough. The rafters of the average garage will not hold a big engine.

What about a standard 2 ton shop crane?

I am unsure of their reach and height.

I will probably build an A-frame set-up using a two 2x12 for the header and 4x4s for the legs

At a marina here they have iron welded to the back of a long pipe so they can pick it up with the forklift, stick it through the back door, lift up the motor and back it out the door. There is an electric winch (front bumper truck type) and a 12 volt battery on the pipe to do the lifting. Take as many parts off as you can, in place, if you have to lighten it. Sam
