i appreciate the constructive post for and con the free plans.
gonzo make the point as a love affair between the designer and the boat, so they not always make pay for it, they want the baby born and sailing. it is a valuable point.
troy said that not all free plans are bad since some are old and out of copyright, therefore for free.
par is more careful about free plans.
hoytedow warn against the difficulty to adapt old plans.
and tim b tell me very wisely to take my time.
i read an interresting thread by boston. i am not by far in the same league, but you all helped him very nicely.
thank you for your valuable input. i will research and will come back with some finding.
And when you start building, we want pictures.

Free plans are like pictures of run way models from the 1950's. They were hot once, but you'd really prefer something a little more up to date, if you had to live with it now.

I dunno... some of those 1950's runway models actually had curves and padding. You could cuddle up to them without the risk of being stabbed to death by a hip bone or a rib....

I'm hopelessly and shamelessly reactionary when it comes to guns and boats, anyway. I own rifles and pistols dating back to the 1890's, and I'm getting ready to build William Atkin's 21', two-masted 'cruising canoe', drawn in 1933.

But of course I can afford to indulge my tastes, because both activities are just hobbies. If I shot for a living I'd probably be using an AR-15 rifle and a 1911 pistol, and if I worked out of a boat I'd own a modern, practical one.

As a first build for Larry, I would suggest the 15' outboard utility Diablo, by Phil Bolger. It was specifically designed for ease of construction, and enough have been built to prove it practical. The plans are available from Dynamite Payson, or Larry could just buy his book, 'Build the New Instant Boats,' which has the scaled-down plans in it -- along with a lot of how-to's and helpful advice. I'd lend him my copy, but I think one of my nephews has made off with it....

I googled around and found a build blog for Diablo, by a gentleman who did a nice job:

"i read an interesting thread by boston. i am not by far in the same league, but you all helped him very nicely."...we all love Boston (one way or another)...his heart is in the right place, and he desperately needs a boat in his life....it is a serious case of lost love and the need to create a new life with a new love in his life...BOATS.

it is probably a misunderstanding: i mean not in the same league as boston as a boat-builder.
boston is a professional with wood, i am a debutant.
this is what i was meaning by : not in the same league.
