Looking for plywood

I have a plan to build a shellback dinghy to pull behind my trawler. It calls for 6 l/2 mm and 12 mm okoume plywood. We're on the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan's UP. Any ideas where I might find this anywhere in the Midwest? I'm also looking for teak & mohagany dimension lumber. Russ

I got real excited when i checked noahsmarine then i realized that the prices were two years old. Are there anylinks on eastcoast suppliers of ply and other marine materials?

I just rebuilt a 42 Hatteras. I am currently painting a 65 hukkins that brian blake is rebuilding. I have a customer looking to do a rebuild on possibly a viking(depending auction price). I am looking for as many wood sources as possible. The proverbial saying tryng to get things in an inticing price range. In search of the best price and best selection.

I'm in the process of getting three boats (all wood) ready for a show in 6 weeks. They all need oak, teak and plywood, and I'll get it, though as these things go, I'll find a better price just after the epoxy sets up on the stuff I just bought.

I usually stock up when I see a good deal, having piles of lumber everywhere. I'm rather low at the moment and I had a heart attack in the fall so my funds are strained. Now I feel like most folks looking for lumber, can't find it, priced too high, don't meet the board foot minimums per species requirements, etc. This sucks. Hope you have some better luck . . .

At Gougeon Bros epoxy workshops I recall, some years ago now, that Detroit Lumber was always a good first place to check for any/all plywood.

The name stuck with me as I had a project coming up that needed a pallets worth of 3/8" marine ply and was told their prices were the best around. Quick search on Google didn't cough up any URLs - try Detroit or Greater Detroit Yellow pages.

BTW - don't get too hung up over requirement for 6.5mm ply, go with 6mm or 1/4" (especially if price is higher) also if fiber-glass sheathed (it should be for longevity) - you can add back reduced strength/stiffness by using superior fiberglass cloth material ie stitched biaxial or slightly heavier cloth 9oz instead of 7 for example.

We order our plywood from Harbor Sales in Maryland. They are listed in the phone book. I don't know if they have a web site.

Shipping to Minnesota is expensive, so we ask a few friends to place orders as well, and share the shipping cost.

In the Detroit area I buy Marine plywood at Public Lumber Co at I-75 and 7 Mile Rd. Phone#313-891-7125 Last fall (Sept 03) 3/8" Marine $49.00 + tax.
I also bought a scarffer for my saw from Gougeon Bros so I could scarf extra plywood and glue pieces together to eliminate costly waste. Bill

Boulder is pretty good, but they are just north of Boston, so shipping might be kinda high. There's one in White Plains, NY, though the name isn't coming to me at the moment.

If you're looking to save money, you can also use fir marine plywood. I'm actually building the Shellback Dinghy as well, and that's what I used. Instead of the mahogany, I'm using oak, though I'm a little wary of it. I heard from some sources that it may not expand much and there may be some leaking problems. Any idea on that one?
