Our next step was to work out the exact dimensions of the sections needed to build up the stem, and to confirm that they could be taken out of the available timber. Big sigh of relief when I was able to confirm that the old mantel-piece was just big enough to do the job.
The attached drawings are examples of those I developed to mark out, and cut from the available slabs.
Asked by some observers why I didn't just laminate the stem. my answer has been '
There's always a more difficult way if you look for it!'
This certainly not the easiest way, but it does provide an opportunity to get up-close-and-personal wth the component shapes without ruining any beautiful timber.
That will be the next step but, hopefully with precise and comprehensive dimensions, I can get it right first time.
