| Do Not Glass The Bottom Of An Old Wooden Boat Ever!!!! JUST DON'T DO IT MY VOTE:GLASSING OVER THE BOTTOM IS DEATH TO THE BOAT AND SHOULD BE OUTLAWED!! There is NO Doubt, NO Question, No Mistake, (IT JUST DESTROYS THE BOAT) IT IS IRREVERSIBLE (This is just my opinion) |

| How about neither of the above? It may not always be the best thing to do, and it needs to be done right. But there are plenty of boats still floating after having it done. What's the name of that couple who sailed their old 100+ year-old English pilot cutter all over the world? They eventually gave up fighting the tired planking and fastenings, glassed the hull while they were down under, and were quite pleased with the results. One thing I remember reading: glassing the boat actually made it lighter in spite of the added weight of the cloth and resin, because the planking dried out.

| hey mate, horses for courses...some old boats have a new life because of the glass bottom added, they would have been scrapped if it was not for the glass...cost sometimes over rule good shipwright sense.

| I've glassed a lot of commercial fishing boats for customers. If they get five more years out of a forty year old boat they are thrilled.

| No one is going to be able to tell you the condition of your boat without seeing her. |

| If the wood is in a good condition then it could work, the glass will make a protective layer on the outside, but that is as far as it goes. Do not expect the glassed outer to substitute strength and hold a weak wooden boat together, it won't.

| Well I bought her because she was glassed over thinking that was a good thing. Apart from cracks around and just under the toe rail plus across the stern the glass looks great, But i have found some soft places and can smell a bit of rot down below, do you think i need a survey i did not have one when i bought her. HOW STUPED AM I?? |

| Hell where's Par now. He'd tell you about his flat balls again ![]() Since we cannot see what condition the rig is in I suggest you take it to someone that works with wood as well as glass and get their opinion on it, a costing and how much work it will take.

| Berny you know what i think and this is exactly the problem. Gonzo thinks five years is good i think 6 or 7 yrs is possibly OK, The point is don't go to sea with one if you don't know all about it that is definitely a fair comment. I DON'T KNOW WHY WOODEN BOAT GUYS ARE NOT WARNING PEOPLE I TRY TO? |

| The poll needed more options, but I voted certain death for the hull, at least as pertains to its original design, but I also believe it would add a few more years of use to a boat that still could serve a purpose.
