Well, phooey. I came home yesterday planning to concentrate on the outboard for a day or two. Instead, I'm lying here in a hospital. !@#$%.....

I have deep vein thrombosis, which is a fancy way of saying a major vein in my leg is clogged with an 18-inch blood clot. I spent yesterday being bounced around through doctors and labs like a pinball, and wound up here last night.

Supposedly they're going to let me out this afternoon, and put me on Coumadin (Warfarin) for six months. The doctor says they used to prescribe bed rest, to keep pieces of the clot from breaking loose and traveling to the brain or lungs, but they've decided inactivity actually increases the odds of it happening.

Anyway, it kind of puts a crimp in my plans to play marine mechanic. For some reason they wouldn't let me bring the outboard and some tools into the hospital room....

I thought they were more undertanding than that in Cal. Good luck, here's hoping for your speedy recovery.

Tell me about it! Been there done that. After you've been on that stuff they'll probably move you over to Plavix (Clopidogrel) for life: cough too hard and you're black and blue with bruises ... but at least you are still living and it doesn't interfere with making boats. Rat poison eh? Could explain why my daughter's cat eying me sometimes makes me nervous.

If I survive, I'm going to claim it proves I'm not a total rat...
We'll wait and see. According to my doc, if I don't get another clot when they take me off after the six months, I'm good to go. He thinks it was 'provoked' by something like sitting with a chair edge digging into my leg, and I'll probably be fine.

Of course, he also said that if I do get another one, I'm back on the warfarin for life. He didn't mention Plavix.

I beat you. Mine was 19 inches. It will take a year to clear it away. No skipping or sitting cross-legged.
