There is no reason why that the technology can not be modified for many other applications in all types of hulls.
Not a lot of difference to an Atlantic crossing record breaking effort.
    Just expense.

Those mud boats have the problem of being restricted to low HP motors and difficult to handle with a high motor mounting, and a dicey drive system, where you could use big V/8s with the Burmese design
and still have an easy controlled boat.
You can use heavy earth moving style parts in construction.

They need them to chop up all the plastic they have thrown into the water

I don`t think "they" have got that problem to themselves.
There is so many ways to build these type of propulsion for boats but it does not seem that any of them have discovered how to get up to 30 degrees of steering left and right and rise and fall movement around 360 degrees of shaft movement.

Hence the fixed shaft and moving engine
You would be very hard pressed to beat that in the usage they need

I am sure they would all change to an easier to handle and better balanced system if they could see what is available and possible.
Even Western boat operators trying to copy the Asian adaption build very crude copies
with no thought about including improvements to make boating safer and easier to operate.

I don't know. It didn't seem to work for the natives in the Americas or the natives of Australia, disease more than decimated the peoples.
